Blown headgaskets seldom doom a motor. The motor will most often hydro-lock from coolant in the cylinder, or puke coolant and/or oil out of the head. Neither is usually fatal. The reason why the temp went up is because the block was probably short-cycling coolant due to loss in coolant pressure.

Probably just needs a head gasket.

ETA - The oil is definitely toast though, no matter what.

Like others wrote the engine is most likely not toast and could chooch again with a little bit of love and care.

Depends on the condition of the rest of the car, too.
