The New Ford Maverick

Once again engineers design something that people do not want.

Google children’s drawings of trucks. To make it easier use the images filter to see what is a child’s drawing and more professional. You will find two distinct characteristics: 1) It is a two door vehicle. 2) It has a full sized bed.

If you have a college degree and design anything lacking those two key elements, you should be fired. Because even a three year old that May on may not be potty trained understands two doors and full sized bed.

I am glad Ford has quit making cars. Now if they would only start making trucks instead of SUV’s with open air trunks.

I'm not glad Ford stopped making cars. I drive cars. I like cars. We need choices. In this day and age of technology, I don't think it's too much to ask to give us choices other than just trucks or a Mustang. And while they're at it, bring back station wagons and full-sized cars. There was never anything wrong with station wagons or full-sized cars. If they can make trucks as big as they are these days, (they're huge!), they're not worried about gas-guzzling vehicles, so bring back big cars. I'm a tall guy and would like to be able to fit in a car.

Ford quit making cars because they suck at it. They don't last. It's like they buy steel that is pre rusted and you constantly have to have parts replaced. I will never buy a Ford anything ever again.

If you think only Ford is getting cheap in their products, all car companies are doing it too. No car lasts like they used to. I have a 1950 Chevrolet that is 71 years old. Let's see new cars last that long. Any new car.

We were talking about this on the Drive last week. The main consumer that they're after is the urban soccer parents, similar how the H3 was marketed. Not really an off road, not really a trailer puller. Ford thinks that they can tap into the urban hybrid wanna be market.

My point was all this thing is is a crossover with the trunk lid torn off. 4.5 foot bed? Really? Take the second set of damn doors off, put a 7 foot bed on it and I'd buy one but not like it's designed.

If the cab is longer than the bed it's not a truck.

What's needed is to limit financing to three years. You'd see a return to more practical vehicles.

Ford quit making cars because it's more profitable to make trucks and SUV's.

My point is that if you can’t make a truck, you are screwing up cars as well.



Back to the Maverick (which was a car—see how bad the screwed it up?) Dad had a Maverick back in the day and Grandma had a Comet (Mercury). A FWD hybrid doesn’t scream truck. But if you want to two anything, please upgrade to a 2.0L gasoline engine and then upgrade to AWD for 4000 lbs towing. Which will get you a camper. An ultralight 17 footer that probably has the toilet with a shower wand for a bathroom.

Now one nice feature (on the Lariat package no less) is the ability to have the Maverick recognize that you have your key fob in you pocket (or maybe just Bluetooth range of your smartphone) just like the Toyota Prius has done for about 10 years now. Oh, and the Prius has an AWD model (when on battery) and might have more trunk space than the Maverick’s bed. Because at 6 foot I could lay down the rear seats and fit in the expanded trunk area of a Prius. The Maverick would require dropping the tailgate and still laying at an angle.

Barebones, about $21,000 (after that destination charge, tax and title). But unlike the Elio...this is being made.

My opinion, Ford should have turned the Fusion into a 2 door Ranchero with a 5.5 to 6 foot bed. And could have continued with the standard Fusion car. Thus making their customers happier all around. Sadly “foreign manufacturers” hire more Americans to build theirs than “American” companies do. Something that needs to be addressed at the next bailout discussion.

Ford stopping production on cars is probably the best long term financial decision they will make. Considering Honda, Toyota, and KIA are all producing good quality cars at "affordable" rates, there is 0 reason for ford to continue its research into creating new cars when they can use that money on the emerging EV market.

Yeah, it looks pretty lame.
My fullsize truck gets 30 mpgs with an 11000 lb tow limit.
Granted I had to tune it a bit.
That 40 mpg pickup is so underpowered that it's mpgs will droo significantly with just passengers in the car.
8 spd cvt? Avoid like the plague.
Who is designing all these "tars"?
Try crash avoidance (swerving) on the highway in one of these toys while pulling a trailer.

Can't speak for the newer Fords but the 80s and 90s were great years to buy Fords.

Rangers, Mustangs, Tauruses, and believe it or don't......... Escorts....I knew plenty of peeps with that owned the first three, and I owned three Escorts -- an Escort station wagon, an Escort Pony, an Escort LX....only had three complaints and that was with the LX.

A headlight kept blowing because the housing would fill up with water, drilled a hole in it and it fixed it. Hated the automatic seat belt. Factory stereo got stuck on one radio station, but tape deck and volume control worked so...

All three were manuals and great on gas.

The Rangers were great lil pickup trucks. Never owned one but I plan on getting a late 80s to early 90s one.

And the 5.0s.....my friend let me drive his 89 Fox body 5.0 for about an hour, while I was delivering pizza...

I had a 91 Ranger that I sold when it was 22 years old. Replaced with a 2004 Mustang that was 7 years old. Had an 84 Ranger before the 91. And almost bought a “retired” Florida Highway Patrol Mustang 5.0 but I was happy with the Cutlass. The 91 Ranger I bought off Dad in 94 because he bought a 94 Ranger.

Honestly, I’d like a 64 or 65 Falcon Ranchero.

But this new Maverick, the new Ranger and even the newer F-150’s are crap when it comes to style. I even like the ride of the Fusion, looks like a turd though.

By their standards this 1939 Ford is might be a trunk because of the rumple seat...which might be a bigger “bed” than the Maverick...even though it only has two doors.

Overall, it looks like Ford is introducing a design of Ute to the U.S. market. To what extent the model is useful for farmers and blue collar workers is another matter entirely. A double cab (four doors) Ute does make more sense for carrying passengers.
