The Biden administration has placed around 28,000 radio ads in Latin America as part of a stepped-up campaign to discourage people from journeying to the US. But amid a dramatic spike in migrants to the southern border, many of whom have been lured by false information and rumors from smugglers, it's not clear the ads are resonating.

At first, the message from the US government seems subtle. Set against a soft melody, a roughly 45-second radio ad running in Guatemala features a conversation between two men -- one who wants to join a caravan to travel to the US with his child and another trying to talk him out of it.

The man wishing to leave says that it's easier to cross the border with a child, but his friend quips that he's wrong and lays out the dangers of traveling north, saying they can be assaulted, kidnapped or killed, and run a higher risk of contracting coronavirus.

Honestly, I don't listen to local radio, they don't play the kind of music I like.

I set the dial to an oldies station and after about 20 minutes that ad came on it even says, "A message from the government of the United States" at the end.

Once they began airing those Ads, they probably then just thought &/or were told:

"Don't worry about it. They're just trying to scare you because they don't want you there, but trust me, once you get there you will see just how easy it actually is for both you and your children to cross the border."

Not really, everyone knows it isn't a walk in the park. One of the reasons for the caravans is that they hope the numbers will help them fend off robbers/kidnappers.

The ad actually says that even being in a caravan won't guarantee you won't get assaulted or kidnapped. It is true, when watching them walk through where I lived I noticed that people/families with children would often fall behind the main group.

Of course, some people are willing to take the chance and hope luck is on their side.

The Vice President of the United States (EU), Kamala Harris , toured Mexico and Guatemala to speak with the presidents of both nations. He expressed his concern about the corruption and impunity that occurs in the two countries.

The main reason for the visit was "to attack the migration problem from the root." In his speech to the Guatemalan migrants, he told them that what the US government wanted was for Guatemalans to "find hope in their own home." He warned them that his country was going to reinforce security at its border, repeating twice a resounding, "Don't come!"
