What? FBI demands USA Today hand over names of EVERYONE who read a story

So, now law enforcement agencies want to to know the IP addresses and phone numbers of people who just read a story on a news site. What?

You can now be investigated for simply reading a news story on a common news site? This is crazy.

The FBI is asking for the information of everyone who read this story between 8.03pm and 8.38pm on February 2 in what USA Today and its publisher Gannett is calling a violation of the First Amendment rights of them and their readers

A government demand for records that would identify specific individuals who read specific expressive materials, like the Subpoena at issue here, invades the First Amendment rights of both publisher and reader, and must be quashed accordingly,' lawyers for Gannett, the company that owns USA Today, said.

They added said the subpoena's vague reference to 'a federal criminal investigation' cannot 'possibly justify such an abridgment of free speech.'

The FBI has not commented on the subpoena or on what grounds it should have the information.

Perp is dead and they are looking for the IPs and names of people that looked at the story in a 35 minute window almost 12 hours after it was published.
They are obviously looking for the perps cohorts in a child porn ring.

Just speculation, but they're probably trying to determine the identity of someone who posted specific comments under that particular article during that time frame.

The comment probably contained information that had not yet been publicly released.

Thinking this further.. how about we ban paper because of the environment and store everything digital? Lot of easy crime solving and evidence collecting.

The amount of time and skill put into handwriting is wasted too and could be used for different things like field work. While we are at it, only those that are not guilty of wrong-think will be able to publish things outside of their inner peer circle. We gonna do it right the first time so we start with a whitelist and see who makes it.

No it isn't and there was murder involved. Many times the criminals love to brag about there doings. They read newspapers, eat food have sex and take a dump. Just like you and I. This is a criminal investigation. Get it? So here we have a setup or a leak from a snitch.
