Descendants Of Blacks Enslaved By Indigenous People Push Back

Well here is an interesting history lesson playing out in modern day politics. Some of the Native American tribes owned black slaves in the 19th century. These slaves, known as Freedmen, are not recognized by many of the tribes that enslaved their ancestors and are fighting to be recognized.


Cook County Commissioner Stanley Moore said Monday that before a vote can be taken on changing the holiday to Indigenous Peoples’ Day, tribes should “acknowledge their role in the rich history of Black slaves.”

Moore, who said he is a direct descendant of a Choctaw Freedman, said tribes have unfairly denied descendants full tribal membership — and are excluding them from such benefits as education and housing assistance and casino profits.

“They are discriminating against us, and if they do not want to recognize the Freedmen and their descendants, they should no longer accept nor receive federal taxpayers’ dollars based upon the census population of the Freedman,” Moore said in a statement.

“We have an opportunity today to put a spotlight on the injustice that is happening to our brothers and our sisters,” Moore said. “We will not stop until all the Five Civilized Tribes honor the sacrifices of their black slaves. ... If we decide that it’s more important that Black Freedmen lives do not matter, and I will have to urge a ‘no’ vote.”

Everyone has their hand out, cry me a river.
So tired of hearing everyone cry about and trying to profit off of what happened 500 years ago.
I am sure my ancestors were wronged at some point in their lives too, I want reparations.

I won’t compare the Holocaust to slavery and nobody else should either, not even close.
Nobody killed 6 million slaves.

Edit: Yeah after I typed that about the vikings I thought about it but I posted sarcastic storm as a kind of allegorical humor where I play as ignorant as the idea of the thread. Thank you all for pointing out the reality on vikings, though.

No, there is not. Vikings apparently arrived about 1000 AD. However,you are right for the wrong reasons. There is no such thing as a "Native American." They got here first, but they did not evolve here. DNA proves they are of Asian origin, and for the record, everyone, including you and me, is of African descent. Calling them "First Nations," as Canada does, is fair. Calling them "Native Americans" is a bastardization of the truth.

They were called the Windover bog bodies.

the leading theory is now the first people in the Americas North and South came from Asia across the Bering Strait during the Last Glacial Maximum. which started about 30,000 years ago and ended about 11,000years ago. the oldest known sites are dated to 24,000 years ago, found in the Bluefish Caves near the the U.S. Alaska Canadian Yukon border, and considered to be the ancestors of all people in North and South Americas when they left the cave area about 16,000 years ago and started to move all through the lands.

this has started replacing the multiple-waves theory of migration across the Bering Strait.

best i can recall is that the vikings didn't get anywhere near North America until 985 or 1000.

Why all Americans? My family would have petitioned the Trips to properly immigrate to this land had they been encharge of it 60 years ago. But they weren't so we couldn't.

But on topic I think repaying anyone for something you didn't do is wrong. Especially because none of the people involved were alive during the transgressions.

Punishing people for the sins of their ancestors is just vindictive. At that point the victim becomes the abuser.

I'm Cherokee.

So I'm going to assume that I'm not what you would consider an asshole white supremacist.

As a Tribe we adopted black former slaves as "Freedmen" a long time ago.

The Freedmen had to fight for over 100 years to be allowed to vote in the Cherokee Nation.

It wasn't solved until quite recently, as a matter of fact.

Can you tell me what the topic we are discussing has anything at all to do with your rather pathetic attempt at a virtue signal?

The title and topic is a little misleading.

Certain Tribes accepted and took in former black slaves as "Freedmen."

They were accepted into the Tribes but were not given formal Tribal status because of the simple fact that they were not Tribal members, by blood.

So they were allowed to live with the Tribes on their lands as literally "Free Men" and given the protections afforded by the Tribes but not given the right to vote, hold a seat on council, be a Tribal government member, etc.

The stipulation that they were not Tribal members genetically was an American Government law.

It had nothing to do with the Tribes themselves.



And ETA, it is not a simple topic.

In the case of the Cherokee, Freedmen are allowed to own Cherokee lands, have access to our health care and funding but yet the Federal Government does not consider the Freedmen as Cherokee, so the Tribe does not benefit from them in any monetary way from the Federal Government.

It is almost the same scenario that US States are dealing with in the case of illegal immigrants.

Should they be able to vote in the State government political races or hold a Government office in the State if they are cared for by the State, but the Federal Government does not recognize them as citizens so the State cannot?

Things to think about and it is a rather lively topic discussed by Tribal members.
