Yeah, nothing "secret" about it. It was a planned upgrade after the A-10C update.

Such a workhorse aircraft... heard it's a favorite of the ground troops too.

Too bad it's only useful for low risk operations anymore. I love the Hog, but it's time has passed for high intensity conflicts, no matter how much the ground troops love it.

My cabin is 3 miles from the Michigan National Guard gunnery range. They've been doing standoff practice for nearly 6 weeks. Two ship formation flying high cap, rotate down, shoot the crap out of target, exit area at treetop level, return to the cap. I do not know if they're upgraded or not, I assume since they're ANG that they're doing proof of concept.

Several times they mix it up, coming down 5/6 miles and doing treetop runs to target. True story: Our private road runs east/west. Last week two of them came down our road. And I mean literally down our road. Nothing beats that sight.

I wish they would have given the same treatment to the F14 tomcat..

But I guess it lives on in Iran of all places. Perhaps we will see it again soon, lol ?

Almost the entire fleet has gotten the C model upgrade, which includes new wing and systems. This is an additional upgrade they just started that will give them a glass cockpit and LINK-16.

The Tomcat had serious issues that upgrades couldn't contend with. They were godawful maintenance intensive, and until the day they were retired, engine problems. Their biggest reason for existing was the AIM-54, but when they found serious problems with them too, and got rid of them, there was no reason to keep them around.

They used solid fuel, and they found cracks in the fuel and motors.

In its heyday, nothing was as good as a Phoenix missile. Or so I thought....

I looked it up.

I can't believe how little these were used.

US Military has shot off THREE in 1999, all three failed to hit the target. That's it!

Iran, however, is credited with 62 A2A kills during the Iran-Iraq war.

What an expensive platform the Phoenix was!

EDIT
***Are long-range missiles just not needed anymore?

These days I think the focus is on drones getting in range and stealth craft doing the spotting with awacs keeping them from getting jumped. With so much stealth going on BVR is even getting more difficult as turning on a radar will give your position up.

They were (some engineers) engineering a tanker conversion for fire retardant drops for wild land firefighting. That would be the cats meow! Fast to the fire, nimble and fast back for reload.

I was in the Navy in the mid 80s.

F-14s would fly over base and absolutely rattle the windows in the barracks.

As a 18 year old kid,I was extremely impressed.😊

If I’m not mistaking the Phoenix was designed for the A-12 originally.
