I think the radiation exposure on the surface of the planet, toxicity of what ever constitutes soil, and fact that Mars has no active magnetic field, might be of concern as much as the lethality of any indigenous organisms we may find there if im honest.

Imho Humanity may have a better chance colonising the upper portions of Venues atmospheres rather than Mars given the conditions we will face if we ever manage to get people there alive and in one piece.

Discovery of life on Mars is a scheduled event.

Don't get me wrong.. There is great science done by the Mars missions, however it is a long drawn out affair, each one ignoring a myriad of visual as well as sensor driven evidence of previous missions.

Like most things that employ so many people and have such funding, the high level mission is to get the most bang for the buck and continue on until they decide to seriously answer the question.

That will not happen until there is another goal that guarantees the public interest in future missions and that equates to funding.
