I am in monitoring and we have to use surveyors equipment to send locational data to the National Computer Center in RTP NC. Yes, I do recall that disaster. No fines is a sham on the people of India and ultimately the world.

I am not big on ignoring the consequences of bad mistakes by any one or any entity.

Ignoring these things allows others to think it is allowable for them to do the same things. The severity of punishment isn't as important as the certainty of meaningful punishment. It needs to be more than some plant manager was fired too.

There's usually more to it like the company leadership were/are working with a lack of proper Quality Assurance plans that takes safety heavily into account. Lack of proper planning by fools was the real culprit. Allowing fools to kill people without consequences is more than just a little bit stupid.

It most certainly can work. Tesla is proving to be a real blessing to the world. Let us hope he is for real and we can start implementing the new tech into our grids like we should have done. The idiots bloviating over Carbon emissions are blocking the new tech that by passes carbon while pretending to be for it. They are for the wasteful spending on useless ideas while not spending on tremendously good ideas. Good ideas that I believe would work like using Solar panels to crack Hydrogen and Oxygen out of the molecules of water are avoided with BS reasons like it uses more energy. Why does a stone boarder matter in these days of GPS and modern maps?

They matter very much. Reason why is because as the technology improves you will get more and more accurate measurements. Which means they will differ from the old marks more times than not when you go out to do a survey. So for obvious legal reasons surveyors today honor the older property corners. If you find a stone property corner on your property that is considered gospel in the court of law. And you can tell if it's a stone marker by whether or not it has a chiselled X in the top of the stone. They chose stones that were sorta rectangular shaped and about 4 feet long to use to mark corners. They'd bury them half way in the ground and chisel an X on the top of the narrow end sticking up.

ETA: The saying "a country mile" comes from when back in the day surveyors would pull a chain over hilly terrain. Their "mile" was pretty much always off to some degree because when you're going up or down hill it's hard to hold a chain out perfectly horizontal to get an accurate measurement. If everyone just switched over and started using GPS as the gold standard and said screw the stone markers everyone would suddenly find themselves in a border dispute.

As a general practice, the actual "facts on the ground" (stuff like markers, river courses, and roads) usually trump the theoretical borders.

Several years ago, one of the states (I think it was Georgia) tried to "steal" several miles of Tennessee by claiming their border should be several miles further north. In this case, they had an ulterior motive in that they were trying to gain control of the headwaters of some river. Regardless, it went nowhere because the practical location of the border is more important than where it "should" have been laid a long time ago.

Of course there are always exceptions, such as the case of Ellis Island. Old treaties between New York and New Jersey held that NY owned Ellis Island, but NJ owned the waters around it. During the immigrant rushes, the federal government expanded Ellis Island by dredging up more land. New York treated the whole island as theirs, but New Jersey claimed the added land was theirs, and the Supreme Court agreed with them. Today, only the original part of Ellis Island (in the center) is part of New York. There's no practical impact to this decision, since it's all federal land. But if you look at Google Maps or somesuch you can see the convoluted border.
