On the 26th of this month, I posted this: University set to unveil life-size statue of climate activist Greta Thunberg. Now that the statue has been placed on campus...

the students aren't finding it as inspirational as the staff had hoped...

A £24,000 statue of Greta Thunberg installed at a university has sparked anger among students who have branded it a "vanity project".

The president of the student union stated...

"We're in a Covid year, lots of students haven't really had access to campus, lots of them are trying to study online and are in dire need of support. "We are calling on the university to match the statue cost by committing £23,760 in additional funding to student support services across campus.

As stated in my previous posting, rather than tending to the needs of staff and students, the college is more concerned with virtue-signaling.
Among their statements about the statue...

"We know that many find her a controversial figure. As a university we welcome debate and critical conversations."

Right! Their version of debate is; "Be reasonable, see it our way."

Why would anyone want a statue of a ventriloquist dummy?

If I'm ever in Winchester I'm definitely getting my picture taken sitting on that extended finger!

Goosed by Greta.

Try that with a confederate general.

Well, Greta IS white, and now she's privileged. That sounds racist to me. I say we put a rope around it and pull it down.

As much as I'd abhor any statue being torn down, I'd love to see the evil left twist themselves into knots defending it.

OK from one angle, but from another the age and the features don't add up quite comfortably.
It's like a more wizened, gaunt kinda Greta.
Sorry, but a "tobacco store alien" comes to mind.

Perhaps intended as a slightly futuristic warning in hue - this is the splotchy brown effect global warning will have on pale people's skin.
I mean works for the clothes (a bit over-dressed for our "fiery future" perhaps), but the face?
Reminds me of that time in the 1980's my granny put this dark tanning cream on my face totally unevenly thinking it was sun-block, but instead this stuff made brown patches on my face for days, and I had to go to school like that.
Not the most pleasant of memories.

I give it 24 hours before the first vandalism.

Less than a month til it's relocated to somewhere you can't get to it.

You may be right about that. I'll have to keep an eye on this story and see what happens.

If I was a gambling man I'd put money on it.

She looks like she's dressed up for a Star Wars movie. Oh please.... no.

Perhaps what Greta would look like when she takes her message to the People's Republic of China.
After shoveling doo-doo in a labor camp.

And who will be blamed when the first vandalism false flag is carried out ? 😎

I'm glad you said false flag.
I secretly suspect she's going to get too inconvenient eventually and get bumped off.
Obviously by a racist, sexist, homophobic, far-right, white spreemer. ...obviously.

Good question. Best guess, the students who complained the most about it.

Why would a university care about the students when they have Greta ?

I don't know who made this statue of Greta but it has a mistake. The statue has the mouth closed.

Now girls, looking at Greta, don't you all want to be vegans too?

I don't know, maybe it appeals to a certain crowd, but aren't there some very uncomfortable issues here with the broader fat-acceptance and body positivity crowd?

I mean to some this could be the swan-song Pygmalion of vegan deterioration.
Even normally one could ask, is this healthy for a young woman her age?
I can see many cultures around the world thinking, poor thing, I'm glad she's not my daughter.
Not gonna get many cows for that.

That might be fine for the real Greta as an individual, but to make a statue of this particular body (when there are so many other unrecognized female bodies in harsher struggles), that's not cross-culturally unproblematic.
