Being forced to wear a COVID mask is dehumanizing us.

I have had to wear a mask because my employer demands it. If I refused, I would be fired. That's enforced. Even once Texas removed the mask mandate, my employer quickly sent out an email that we were still required to wear them.

Mine didn’t require masks
And never will

I’d say “quit and work somewhere else” but I know that’s not always an option

Does your employer wear a cast on his asymptomatic non-broken leg?

The kind of masks I wear bring people together. Somebody says, "Hey, I like your mask!" and I say, "I like yours!" and we have a conversation we never would have had without masks

Couldn't you just do the same thing with like a shirt or a jacket or a tattoo or some other accessory the other person's sporting while not wearing a mask?

How does wearing a mask suddenly grant you the ability to talk to people you otherwise couldn't?

Of course you could, but do you? The mask doesn't "grant" you anything. Like I said, the masks I wear attract attention and promote communication. They are not bland nor dull. They are conversation starters. I guarantee you will look at it twice and I can tell a few things about your character by your reaction, including whether I want anything to do with you at all. If a t-shirt with your favorite band's slogan does it for you, by all means knock yourself out. Point is I don't feel "dehumanized" for wearing one and I have more conversations with strangers than I ever would otherwise. If the point escapes you I can't help you.

Never had much of a problem talking to random people to be honest. When I was in the.city it was pretty much a daily occurance. Since covid, masks and social distancing, that's dropped significantly.

Talking to people isn't really a big deal.

My point is, you could have easily had just as many conversations with people without the mask. Just because you find choosing conversation starters difficult doesn't mean the masks made those conversations happen. It means you were confident enough to start those conversations. The mask wearing didn't start them, you did...you could have picked any other thing to start a conversation about and still had a conversation.

Most people are usually pretty open to talking unless they're busy or you come across as crazy or something.

it especially saddens me to see children wearing masks. they simply do as they are told. - oh hang on, 70% of adults are doing that too. thank heavens i'm not a parent, i would feel terrible for my kids having to live this version of reality. i pity them.

I am in the same spot, I even sent an email to my head office on it, I have no choice if I want to keep my job, I HATE IT.
Many companies are doing this, imagine sticking up for your personal rights getting fired and saying you committed secular suicide by refusing to wear as mask at your last job. You would never get hired in any liberal area ever. It's societal blackmail.

Just wait for the vaccine requirement. That will be when I have to make a rough job decision as that's not something I'll do. Then again if they expect me to travel again, I won't be doing that either. We've found out over the last year that most functions at my company can be done without having to go to a client. If I can't be 100% remote it'll be the same choice as the vaccine.

I'm waiting for the day when they tell us covid vaccines are mandatory to work at the company. That will be my last day, if not sooner.

"If you feel dehumanized I suggest it's all in your head"

That is why it is called psychological torture in order to dehumanize the unwilling participant.

The masks are doing great phycological harm, we can't see anybody smile at us, it makes people look more ominous.

I can tell when someone smiles even if they have a mask on.

Where I live people also greet each other, even if they are strangers, so a nice good morning/afternoon/evening, is shared, even from behind a mask.

Honestly, I think people are just looking for a reason to not wear a mask. If you don't want to, just don't. There is no need to try and justify it.

The reason to justify it is that those who don't or can't wear a mask are being villanized, including children and the handicapped, where I live anyhow.

I have learning disability where my hearing is fine but I can't retain anything without seeing the mouth and I never ever look at eyes. I feel totally cut off from society and yes that's psychologically damaging. I can't breath in the damn things and it makes me panic seeing all the zombies. This needs to end.

I can't express how happy I am that my kids just turned 19 and 20 and grew up with freedom. I mean, I still feel awful for them having to live in this world but it's not like the horror of seeing a little kid with an oxygen filter strapped to it's face all day rebreathing their own exhaust. That's just sick.

Sorry to hear about your condition but that is a very specific case, isn't it, and OP really wasn't talking about that.
