Forgot to add, one of the ironies is that after reconstruction, blacks were starting to make inroads in regards to integration. Much of the segregation started from Woodrow Wilson segregating the federal government which bled over into society at large. Wilson also screened Birth of a Nation at the White House.

That's what the history books tell you; I am recanting family legends. They went underground several times, as it was come sort of Yankee hobby back then to continue to "punish" uppity Southerners. The KKK had also always been a secret organization that fought the politicians and power brokers; it took time for that paradigm to shift, even in the face of a new "enemy." But the KKK never was on the verge of dying off.

Economics was a big reason why we turned red in 1980, but not the only reason. Jimmy Carter was a great man, deserving of the Nobel Prize he received, but he made one lousy President. His downfall was the situation in Iran. I still remember the gas lines and rationing, and the crazy inflation levels of the 1970s. The 1980 election was more a condemnation of Carter than an acceptance of Reagan in the South. Once elected, though, the gas lines went away, stagflation went away, people began to prosper as you say, and people also felt a sense of pride in the US again. That was what really threw the switch.

The thing I have always considered ironic is that the blacks in the South were hurt almost as much by the war and Reconstruction as the whites; in some ways more. The war criminal William Tecumseh Sherman killed more "freed" black slaves during his March to the Sea than probably every slave owner in the entire South did in all the years before that. He would, as I mentioned, raze the buildings, burn the crops, and destroy everything they didn't take, leaving nothing behind but scorched earth and freed slaves. Of course the freed slaves tried to follow, as there was nothing left for them to live on, but "Uncle Billy" ordered the bridges to be burned behind him so they couldn't follow. Those bridges effectively trapped the "freed" slaves geographically in an area where there was literally nothing to eat. The majority starved to death.

The South never hated blacks before Reconstruction. Even after the war, they hated the Yankees for all the needless destruction. It's just that the Yankees weren't here; they were sitting in their ivory towers looking down on the people they had devastated in case they missed taking something of value. The only other people that were here were the black ex-slaves that had survived.

People are a funny kind of critter. When they get hurt badly, they always find someone to hate. Doesn't have to be logical or realistic. Sort of like today.

No, he was actually charged with a hate crime! That in and of it's self speaks volumes. That is a statistic I'd be interested in seeing, the number of racial hate crimes and a break down of the race of those charged.

I'm getting the distinct impression that to most on the left, "racist" means someone who doesn't give freebies to the minority du jour. A "non-racist" is someone who gives freebies to minorities. That makes no historical sense, because slave owners gave the black slaves under them free food and clothing... so are they no longer racist?

Like you, I consider racist as anyone who thinks another race is inferior. That does appear to cover most if not all Democrats as of late. Maybe appearances are deceiving, but... damn...

That was the West Coast Army commander who actually ordered it. But FDR approved it, or at the least, didn't quash it.
