The source of your confusion is Rev 13:18

Rev 13:1-18 is off only because of the last verse. Could it be that the last verse doesn't even belong at all to the vision?

Basically, Rev 13:18 is John's own two cents added, because the vision stops at Rev 13:17.

And it could be that John tried to frame Nero Cesar.

I no longer buy Rev 13:18. I do buy Rev 13:1-17 though as truth, because it all reads like a smooth flowing vision. You? Or will you continue to be confused by Rev 13:18? It's time for you to realize, that Rev 13:18 doesn't even fit into the vision part.

And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.

It is in the oldest fragment of revelation dated to 225-275 AD but is 616 (chi, iota, stigma (ΧΙϚ)) not 666.

Because ancient manuscripts were so vulnerable to damage and loss, the oldest fragment is not necessarily the oldest and best text tradition.
I have seen the plausible suggestion that 616 is what you get if you work from the Latin version of Nero's name instead of the Greek version.

If you were to look suspiciously on any passage of Rev. consider this one: "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book" (Revelation 22.18)

If you were to omit any part, e.g., the one you incriminate, consider carefully: "And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." (Revelation 22.19)

Notice that if Rev. 22.18 were itself an "afterthought", then it would condemn and curse its inventor.

The standard deal with those who deny the power and promise of God to preserve his words correct, accurate, whole and complete is to always go to manuscripts, make statements like the oldest and not necessarily the best.

It is far more easier and an act of true Faith to trust God's word in Psalm 12:6-7. And believe that he that is God, did not preserve his words in a multitude of fragments of documents in dead languages or translations or Versions. But that to EVERY GENERATION he has preserved it as promised into a single volume that has all the words, phrases, verses and sections in it. The only Bible available TODAY that meets this criteria is the King James. Love it or not, it is a fact, it does contain every word, phrase, verse and section in the trade language of this generation which is English.

Every word in it is defined by context,no need for a dictionary. But a modern dictionary does well to give you the advanced Revelation of God's words. There is a built in cross reference that God himself supernaturally put into the King James that is not found in any other version. (Because men have changed, removed and added words of their choosing and liking). This cross reference system God put in it is the most amazing thing God has done to help you Rightly Divide the Word of Truth as he has commanded in 2 Tim 2:15.

If there is ANY "Christian" Bible in the world that is inaccurate, it is the King James version. The King James version is, quite literally, the result of one arrogant royal who couldn't handle the fact that his sperm weren't swimming properly. He took the Bible, removed all sections he personally didn't like and rewrote other sections simply so he could keep divorcing women and marrying over and over. It is, perhaps, the most corrupted piece of Christian religious drivel to hit any shelf anywhere with the possible exception of things like the Book of Mormon or other similar wacko books.

Apart from all of this, the vast majority of biblical controversy is perpetuated by crappy translations of the Bible into other languages. You want a real Bible? Read one in Latin that the majority of Orthodox Churches have or go to a mass conducted in the original method of the Priest never even facing the congregation during mass. Go ahead - the King James is only in English and then was translated to other languages so the majority of controversies get exacerbated even more because of bad translations due to some royal doodling around with a book.

The book of Esther is one of the most hateful combination of letters ever to have been committed to writing.

There is no mention of God in that one most detestable desecration of the Holy Bible, the whore and her weak, cowardly, angry eunuch even supplemented the word* of God by inventing a feast, the Purim. This book served the purpose of displaying the Jew as a vile tapeworm. That piece of abomination is worse than a serpent in Eden, yes it is an androgynous self-fornicative Adameve, that's what the Book of Esther is to the Bible.

The Song of Songs is hideous too. But Solomon wasn't an example either, an edifying counterexample.

It makes sense that 666 was changed to 616 to accomodate "Nero" gematria in a different language. However, seeing Nero the man, as the beast, doesn't take much wisdom which is prerequisite to understanding 13:18.

Nero may have been a follower of Mithras which was a popular religion in Rome at that time. Mithras the sun-god or sun worship is often times referred to 666 (Babylon magic square 6x111). Which may in itself point to solar chakra (fire) that drives our ignorance, thirst, jealousy, treachery, shame, fear, disgust, delusion, foolishness and sadness.

Mithras killing of the bull is displayed on the wall of St. Prisca Mithraeum (c A.D. 200). So mithraism's relationship to christianity has roots in Christianity's very beginnings. The harlot turning sabbath day to "sun"day to the sun cross on forehead or done by right hand. To even celebrating Mithras birth in December.

Is there any question as to whom the harlot that sits on seven hills of rome really serves?
