Honestly, I bet most Americans couldn't tell you the names of half the Royals from across the pond.

They have no political pull in the US that I know of, and I don't know that they have any pull in England.

Actually the Queen is the supreme ruler. The Prime Minister wields his power on behalf of the Queen.

Both, but especially the latter.

You have to join one of the special clubs and wank in a coffin in front of your peers or something before you learn the reptilian names.

You make it sound so banal but it really is a very spiritual moment. It was the greatest three seconds of my life.

Merely highlighting there are steps involved... And if there's something Americans hate, it's steps, whether physical or metaphorical.

They don't care about the Royals but they do seem to be fascinated watching a woman who has estranged herself from her own family estrange her husband from his.

I certainly don't. I lived in the UK from 1990 to 1995 and I didn't care about the royals then either. I think many Americans worship the rich and famous. This is just an extension of that. I'll be honest and say that I've been reading the articles about Queen E and the clan more than in the past. I think it's just a sign of how uninteresting the rest of the news has become to me. It's also funny to read about Meagan whining on and on about how bad it was to live on a crown estate and have servants.

She must have a talent that the rest of us haven't seen to get him to do that.

Woah dude, are you putting the blame on her?

She has enough boxes to check off to win progressive bingo.

He on the other hand is a literal representation of patriarchy, along with other archys. On top of that, he has gingervitis.

Tread carefully gortex.... Something something she's strong?

Women's magazines?

Or, how about, America went all rebel and that, way back then, but afterwards, they still based everything on the writ of British Common Law and it's still there to this day. They only added a couple of local amendments and a lot of caselaw.

If we are being honest, most Americans don't know who the governor or senators of their states are.

This is probably your first and only REAL answer to your question. Here it goes.

Why do Americans care about the"royals"?

For the exact same reason American people care about Hollywood "stars" and read People which is about peering into the lives of people who have what they wish they had. (looks, fame, money, whatever)

The most telling is why Americans care about the absolutely worthless and talentless Kardasians. Who the heck knows why people care at all, except the Kardisians are doing their absolute best to force people to care about their nasty huge butts and their worthless lives by constantly staging almost obscene pictures of themselves doing ridiculous things.

The royals live weird lives that is over covered by media and often put themselves in front of cameras on purpose, for "good" causes.

People get curious about those weird lifestyles
and weird lives lived in feudal type castles
with strange and obsolete rigid rules of interaction.
Their lives are so weird and strange
that it makes for "bored panda" type interest.

Like weird cat and dog photos.

Look at the many sites like bored panda,
and all the trash magazines like People and the Star.

Americans are curious about those who lives strange and weird lives
in strange (be it castles/mansions/hollywood) and abnormal places.

It is actually reassuring to many people
when the uber rich who lives abnormal lives feel "oppressed"
or complain about the burden of being ultra uber rich and famous.

It makes the average person feel much better about their lives
to see those who are pampered
with everything they could ever want
who have servants who care for their every need,
complain about how they are unhappy, miserable,
and even discriminated against.

Schadenfreude makes people happy.
