Fun on a quiet Saturday. Now we know why America is so divided and why we can't have Unity. It is the fault of owning cars and our dependence on them. Yes, this person has identified the plague of society which creates division and disillusioned voters who don't vote for Democrats... it is the evil act of car ownership.

Something must be done!

getpocket.com...

Urbanists have long looked at cars as the scourge of great places. Jane Jacobs identified the automobile as the “chief destroyer of American communities.” Cars not only clog our roads and cost billions of dollars in time wasted commuting, they are a terrible killer. They caused more than 40,000 deaths in 2017, including of some 6,000 pedestrians and cyclists.

Writing from prison in the 1930s, the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci dubbed our modern economic system Fordism

Fordism catalyzed the shift to a mass suburbanized society.

But today, the car plays a central role in worsening America’s social, political, and economic divides

America is an increasingly polarized and politically divided nation, and the car both reflects and reinforces those divisions. Car-dependent places are much more likely to have voted for Trump in 2016. Although the associations are stronger for Trump votes, the same basic pattern holds for Romney votes in 2012. On the flip side, metros that voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Barack Obama in 2012 have much higher shares of commuters who use transit or walk or bike to work.

I’m not trying to blame the car for everything that’s wrong in America. But it is increasingly clear that in addition to wasted time and productivity, reduced quality of life, and even fatalities, the automobile takes another toll. It may be that cars are not only the chief destroyer of our communities, but are tearing at the nation’s political and social fabric.

Cars allow people to travel and move about. It is no wonder marxists don’t like cars. They don’t like freedom.

what this is saying is what i've said on ATS for at least a decade: America is 2 nations. We have rural and urban. Our politics are divided like that. Our cultures are divided like that.

And to be honest, the only real issue is that city folks like to say that only cows live out here. Its insulting, and when coupled with other dehumanizing approaches, only makes for hard feelings and increased tension.

I see the value in cities. I don't like them, but they have a value in being hubs of commerce and all the things that brings. I may think folks who live there are crazy for enjoying it...but they are still humans. In the end, they choose city life because of benefits it provides, like easy access to music venues, etc.

This article is another highlight in this difference. Its why we see a left/right battle over EV's. You ever try to drive the 7 hours from Midland, TX to El Paso, TX? I doubt an EV would make it.

I don't drive and never have, my feet still work to get myself places I need to go in a pinch. I'd find it rather irritating/annoying if vehicles poofed overnight, but I could adapt if I needed to.

But that does not mean I think the article is on the mark. Oh it's author was on something all right, but this is how losers blame functional people for their life failings.

If you have to resort to blaming an inanimate object to hide your abysmal shame at your dead-end gender studies poverty wage job of a life, you're still just going nowhere in life at FTL speeds. Congrats, you merely went 'tarded plaid!

Most people like the freedom of the road, whether living in the city, or in the country.

Workaday, I'd take the train if there is one.

Cars require basic adult responsibility to afford, operate, and maintain.

Things that certain people want the government to handle for you.

in rural areas, a vehicle is a necessity.

This town i am in currently is very small. They allow golf carts as well on roads that do not post speeds above 30.

As a fuel head I strenuously disagree with the idea that cars divide anybody.

It brings people together, literally! I can not repeat enough how excited I am for 1th March. That's when the insurance covering for my summer car kicks in. Just in time with the good weather.

Does this include the vehicles that are delivering to the cities everything that they need to live?

Uber drivers, delivery drivers, FedEx delivering Amazon orders, the Postal service, truckers, etc?

I say this person is right and we need to get rid of all of that for a few months.

And just let social Darwinism happen.

Cars in the old days were a way of getting to enjoy the world along the way to have an adventure.

Cars these days are a way of isolating from the environment and enjoying a completely unspontaneous world of assumed predictability from inside a secure bubble to reach a destination that doesn't even have to be considered beyond a direction.

People are losing the art of living.

While I don't think that cars are the reason for divide.
I will say that personal vehicles are a problem. They make us lazy. All the resources it takes to create roads and car infrastructure could in imo be better spent. Also city design would be lots better without having to have roads and parking lots everywhere.

40 years old and I have never liked cars or understood why we need them. Mass transit I feel would better for society as a whole. I've never owned one and it's never held me back. Though I will admit that is partly because I don't live in cities or way out in the country. Don't need a car in a large town.

Double edged sword.

ATTENTION PREASE.

The owner of this membership, Mister DB COWBOY has been arrested and detained for snapping after reading the OP. He leapt up and went into Portland, OR and began bitch-slapping what he called, "Dumbass evil leftists".

He will be released once his re-education has been completed and he is "unified" into the Chi-Com Collective.

Only vehicles I agree with are delivery trucks , police, and rescue. Also buses and trans and planes.

A single personal vehicle for all 250 million adults in this country is just ridiculous.

So as long as the government or Mega-Corps own them it is fine...

But private ownership is bad?

How authoritarian of you.

It appears that you are part of the problem on the planet right now.

Government owning the means and distribution of production. . . what could go wrong!
