Surprised this hasn't been posted, but the man himself has passed away. Admittedly, I really don't know much about the man, and didn't even know who he was until The People vs. Larry Flynt, even though I had heard of Hustler.

My respect for him extends to what he did for free speech, which, again is based entirely on the movie.

Larry Flynt 'Hustler' Founder Dead at 78

Larry Flynt -- the famous and controversial publisher known for launching a porn empire -- has died ... TMZ has learned.

Family sources tell us the mogul passed Wednesday morning in Los Angeles from heart failure.

May he rest well for his defense of free speech, even if the reasons were business oriented and selfish rather than truly noble.

RIP

He fought hard for free speech. Unfortunately, all his efforts died with 2020.

I won’t lie, I thought the same thing. However, I also thought he’d be older that 78 by now.

Faulty memory is probably more accurate than the Mandela.

That was a premature release by Fox News....

The one problem I have with the idea of him fighting for free speech, is that now everyone thinks free speech and expression is all about nudity, crassness, explicit language, etc., but no one thinks it has much to do with freedom of thought or ideology.

You're right, they just do freedom of thought...as an ideology...they never thought of.

I swear to God I thought he died. I know darn well he did.

Mandela effect is real.

Of course, legally, free speech issues are grounded to repercussions/action/censorship by government, not societal repercussions or backlash from private companies, unless it involves discrimination.

Flynt faced legal consequences for violating ordinance/law, not "terms and conditions".

Freedom of thought or ideology are really irrelevant, since they aren't criminalized.

Hustler magazine VS. Falwell ( en.m.wikipedia.org... ) You couldn't get more opposite. But both parties understood the importance of free speech.

I always took it at poking fun at perversion & humanity. But it always came out to free speech. R.I.P. larry...

Plenty of people who think free speech should be restricted through law though, and they aren't talking about Larry Flynt style stuff. They're talking about ideology, hate speech (or rather speech they hate to hear).

I always respected your opinions . To me anyone fighting for free speech is an amazing patriot . If 1/10 of the people had the same fight that flynt had we would still live in a free country

Yeah, Falwell v. Hustler was mostly a libel issue (and butthurt feelz issue), libel being criminal when what Hustler published was protected speech because it was essentially satirical commentary.

Yes, plenty of people *think* certain speech or ideologies should be legally restricted.

They are free to *think* that, though.

The first time he died was really sad... the sting has been lessened with this passing.

Someone needs to reboot our server.

You might be mixing him up with Hugh Heffner?
