Absolutely right about the costs. I guess technology has made some things cheaper than before. However, at the time there was only one phone line per house; compare that to today where your £10 phone plan has to be multiplied by however many people are in a household... everyone wants their own phone, even kids.

I might still have got it but the date was a good clue.

Just me here so the £10 is mine all mine.

Not every household had a phone when I was really young and the coin box was also required for the odd neighbour who came round to make a call!

I think £10 is about average for the most popular (non business) plans.

Yes, a landline was definitely something not everyone could afford or probably needed. In most small towns people preferred to meet and talk in person. I remember living in a shared house that had a phone that was setup by BT to only take incoming calls and dial 999. I didn't miss not being able to call anyone... any excuse to meet my mates down the pub!
