Look at the colors on this thing. Looks like it was painted yesterday. (Well, maybe a few hard years ago, but you know what I mean.)

It's called a "thermopolium," and it is a Roman-era fast-food stall. Making me hungry for some duck bone fragments or the remains of pigs, goats, fish and snails, which is what they found in the pots.

you know back in them days vendors often used pictures to advertise their goods for customers that couldn't read.

looks like this one sold horse meat also. you see a duck, chicken and horse on the front, looks like they might have sold weed to.

well the first one might be a pheasant, kinda hard to tell. looks like they are laying on their backs heels up.

Probably still tastes like chicken.

Thanks for this OP! One can only imagine the conversations held at this stall so long ago. It's beautiful even now.

They probably didn’t eat much horse. Too valuable during war.

I refuse to believe that artwork is any older than 3 years old. And I believe in lizard people.

To me, that first picture looks like two penguins.

Ha ha ha, that's what I thought until I zoomed in for a closer look, as penguins didn't seem logical.

I saw a thermopolium when I visited Pompeii in 2020 (my second visit, first one in 1975/76)
The one I saw was more like the one in the link below.
Pompeii is fascinating!

For some reason, I find the detail on the rooster absolutely stunning.

What an amazing find ... almost like time travel.

Thanks Never for bringing this to us.

I wonder if the food court of the nearest mall will look that good in 2000 years when future archeologists dig it up. I somehow doubt it. I’m sure every mall will be declared a megachurch or temple. Everything they find is a temple lol. It’s nice to see something that is obviously not one.

Very Cool!!

Amazing!

Pompeii is such a bizarre event. It's like time just stopped like a light switch getting thrown. Never have understood how something could happen that fast.

'may I take your order?'

'ill have the pyroclastic flow to go please.'

Jokes aside, the ancients were ingenious, despite the "researchers* on the history channel who shout aliens! because they don't have a clue, a slap in the face to human ingenuity.

If I didn't read the title, I would've thought it was a new York diner, more proof that the ancients were awesome.
