One good thing Trump did we have to acknowledge ( even though he may have done it for the wrong reasons and is blind to Russian perfidy) is that he avoided conflict with Russia. Though seems to have been too willing to stir up a bout with China.

We often forget these three powers have the capacity to blow up the planet and kill all living things in a matter of seconds.

Most sources seem to be in agreement that this attack is sophisticated enough to indicate state sponsorship. A couple have stated that the tracks point to Cozy Bear. Of course they’re going to keep pretty mum about it, and it will take a while to sort things out. Damage assessments could be scary considering it’s been in the systems for 6 months or so. Whoever it was could have been monitoring a whole lot of comms exchanges. I don’t envy the teams tasked with ascertaining the scope of the compromise.

If it’s Cozy Bear, then it’s APT29 (advanced persistent threat). They are believed to be affiliated with Russian intelligence agencies.

This is a nasty cyberattack perpetrated by a not-so friendly foreign entity. We do it too, and so do our allies. They got in a hard shot with this one. There’s egg on some faces, but that’s the game. Cyberspace is a new theatre of battle.
