The sheer hubris...

He sounds like someone who was really angry about something totally different than what he was melting down about but couldn't take it out on that person for whatever reason. Kind of like when you come home pissed off at something your boss said to you and you instantly start in on your husband or wife. That kind of rage has to go somewhere for folks like this. The plebs just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

wait wait wait wait...... so clicking the link takes me to a page that has a picture of Cruise wearing a "valved" n95 type mask.

Valved masks do NOTHING to stop the spread of germs. so he is being a Hippocrit.
I wish i had social media so i could post that thought with the picture.

anyone with social media, feel free to go ahead and post his picture with that mask and use my statement.

Really? I'm no fan of hollyweird, but what about all those ancilliary jobs that go with a set on location? Or the theater operators, or the merch makers?

Or was you being sarcastic?

Tom likes to work. I like to work. Those folks need to work. Tom is employing them. Tom is the boss. Right now, the government is Tom's boss.

We all need to eat.

That sucks and sorry to hear that. I see that here in the UK. Close the pubs and restaurants, but the big grocery stores chains can operate at will.

I think Tom was just saying what most peeps feel right now.

a reply to: Middleoftheroad

And even in tier 3 in the UK, non essential shops can stay open, even in lockdown smaller shops (local corner shops) could stay open as long as people complied with the safety rules.

So not just 'big grocery stores'.

Don't forget hair dressers.
First of all. I was totally against any shutdown.
The damage done to the economy is far worse than the disease it was trying to fix.

I saw a video a couple days ago where a restaurant owner had her outdoor tented serving area shut down and in literally the same parking lot was a tent twice the size as hers for serving food at a film shoot.

So no.. I'm not being sarcastic.
Hollywood can suffer the same as the rest of us.

They are in California.

That's wrong.

Tom is the government's boss. What do you think "civil servant" is supposed to mean?

Hes in the UK. Hes an American citizen. As foreigners, we have to follow their laws.

I expect the same here. But of course, its racist.

Except big grocery stores can sell beer. And lots of other non-essential items. Pubs cannot compete fairly.

I was against the same from the start. But I just got from his rant that he is trying to protect all the worker bees down the line.

Which is the underlying theme of my OP. With a touch of common sense, we coulda all been spared this draconian crap of open,close,open,close......

Trust me, I feel the pain of that but you cannot say the environments are like for like. You don't stand around in a pub drinking beer (not where I live anyway)

Having said that, in tier 3 pubs and other hospitality venues can do takeaway and delivery.

It's called the Movie business for a reason.

You know how many people are employed in making a big budget film ? The last MI movie COST 170 mil distributed among folk from catering, visual effects, advertising etc ... a whole lotta low level folk depend on that 'un-essential" industry.

An outbreak of any kind on set would shutdown production. It's happened before.

Also the insurance company might revoke his coverage if protocols on-set are not followed to the letter.

Valved masks do NOTHING to stop the spread of germs.

......

Demonstrably not true. A good valved mask or respirator has a 99+% probability of preventing the person wearing it from inhaling germs that might be in the nearby air, thereby preventing the spread of germs into that person.

It is true that if the person wearing the mask is infected, then a valved mask will not prevent that infected person from exhaling germs into the nearby air. However, from the standpoint of keeping a pandemic under control, the goal is to keep a person who has an infection from transmitting that infection to a person who doesn’t. If I know that I don’t have an infection, then I can’t possibly transmit it to anyone else so my highest priority should be to not get it from anyone else.

But if it turns out that I am infected and don’t know it, and I am exhaling germs into the air near you, then YOUR best strategy would be to also wear an N95 mask.

This is not hypocritical; if everyone wore N95 masks that would provide less transmission of germs from one person to another than if everyone wore virus masks, which typically reduce the amount of aerosols inhaled by about 25% and the amount exhaled by about 85%.
