That sounds a bit terrible. If it doesn't affect you, sod it?

I'm sure the peeps in Cornwall and Devon would not agree, nor the restaurants that buy said fish.

a reply to: Flavian

Three quarters of fish caught by UK fisherman gets exported to the EU. Leaving without a deal is also going to hurt the fishing industry.

So thanks for the shout out but I do not think it’s racist to be patriotic and I regard myself as a proud member of the tartan army. I might not support brexit but it don’t think it’s in anyway racist to support brexit and am I bit confused as to why you felt the need to single me out.

Regardless I don’t think he is going to cave, right now I just think neither side want to be seen to be the ones responsible for a disastrous no deal, when in reality that was always going to be the inevitable conclusion.

Personally I just hope this leads to Scottish independence.

So do I, I wish they would give us in England the vote so we could vote for your independence and you can take the poisonous little hobbit Sturgeon with you.

Mind you, not before you pay your half of our nations debt and return Trident to us.... Oh and don't even think you will be using Sterling, you can have your own currency.

Scots want independence but then wanna join the EU again??? Makes sense
Not all Scots want independence,SNP idiots want independence.
you're right about the rejoining the EU,what the hell is that about. These clowns have no idea what independence even means, same with the nationalist bit in their party name-nationalists that love flooding the country with foreigners.

Grenade this is exactly the kind of posts we are talking about.

You going to call that out or ignore it.

Being called idiots because we don’t support whatever political party that member thinks we should.

Anybody else have this awful feeling Boris is going to give in to the EU demands.

Bear in mind that Britain leaving the EU was not actually in the script. It was a bit of a shock to say the least that the vote went the 'Leave' way. I voted for leaving and was surprised by the result.

However, saying that, I can't believe that we will ever leave the EU fully. I am waiting for the day to arrive when they announce that the only way for Britain to emerge out of all this year's chaos and financial debt is to remain with the EU, but for that to happen, the British public has to be made to feel financial and economic pain, so much so, that we will agree with the decision.

Global business is so intertwined, so deeply connected, that a country cannot actually go it alone and be successful. It has to compromise in order to trade with other countries and buy in resources it doesn't have for itself. Countries have to scratch each other's backs to do business.

Yep supply and demand, as price goes up (tariffs) less is consumed or other supplies become more competitive. Either way UK fishing industry feels the hit.

Remember Johnson’s oven ready deal?

Well, he lied, what a BiG surprise.

Either way, Covid will be blamed for whatever mess we are left in if we get a deal or not.

Johnson will be gone next year, and the next landowner protector will take over, promising all sorts and delivering nothing but protectionism for their wealthy friends and donors.

I thought that voting in America was screwed up.

How many more years are British politicians going to ignore their marching orders and get away with it?

This is an interesting article. It shows how Germany and France are the bullies and completely hypocritic on things like movement of workers, and recognizing professional qualifications as equal.

Honestly, the EU is nothing more than France and Germany enriching themselves and they are pissed the UK said eff you.

Top one for posting Lakenheath that article. It draws views on the current thinking in the new shrunken EU, like the idea of the Dutch creating a new Hansiatic league to countre the heaveyweights in France and Germany. The thing is these smaller nations that got drawn into the EU especially the central and eastern ones blinkered all the way into believing they were equals, now the trurh is revealed with Macron and Merkel steering the ship and their own national wrights getting trampled on by the cart of Europeanism.

These lesser population / economical countries will always be dominated by their big brothers, one side the German French and the other side the Russian Federadtion. It's inevitable and been going down since the partition of Poland can't remember when but manu centuries ago. It's an illusion to believe Berlin or Moscow aren't go9ing to gain influence over them one way or another, tis a big game in the east

Depends what the caving is for, to be honest. If it is a bit of caving on fishing then i am all for it as fishing is such a tiny part of the economy - so, for me, it isn't worth ruining a deal over.

If it is caving over some of the other measures, for example the EU insistence on arbitrary fines they could impose if they want to change the trade deal in future, then no i am not for caving at all. And i say that as a Remainer and Pro EU person.

I don't get why fishing is being so contentious though. Just tell the EU they can access when our fleet has access and not when we don't. Even at present, this is not implemented. For example, there are times of the year that the French fleet is not allowed to fish their own waters, so they come and fish ours. This should stop as it is nonsenical - if our fleet is denied access then theirs should be too.

At last someone speaks sense.

Fishing in Cornwall and Devon hasn't been a thing since the 1800's. Today the agriculture sector equates too 5% (£165 million) of there GVA. Most of which is outside of fishing (fishing 10 million). Thats 6% of there total agricultural GVA output which is just 5% of the GVA. Tiny, insignificant.

Even in the British hay day of fishing in the 1950's - 80's the bulk of our fleets went to the north sea in Iceland. It lead to the 'Cod wars'. 3 of them in fact.

Baffles me how something that equates to 0.1% of our total GDP is such a hot topic.

I can sympathise with past job losses, my company sacked 1000 people recently, I understand. But sometimes protectionism just slows down the inevitable in a slowly depressing long drawn out process.

Worry ye not! Once we are fully renounced from the EU we will all benefit greatly from our new found riches and a much better NHS. We will most importantly be in complete control! I imagine some Brexit campaigners (hint, hint your Maj
will be recognised by the Queen for our selfless service. Few could argue against the new utopia us Great Brits have been enjoying in the UK ever since the decision to leave.

I understand a number of ATS users have kindly put my name forth for the Queens new year honours list. I am both flattered and humbled. I would like to confirm that I would indeed accept this great honour so as not to disappoint my dear supporters here.

Because those items are inelastic. Which is a fancy way of saying additional taxes dont really affect supply and demand on certain items.

It's a boring microeconomics thing. I did terrible in that class.

Did 4 years of pretty much just that class so.Don't find it boring at all.

Assuming demand is inelastic for say cigarettes as example (less true now than historically) it doesn't mean that people don't change supplier. Tariffs will mean UK industries are at immediate artificial disadvantage.

High end goods will probably do ok where purchasing decisions operate differently but there is certainly going to be impact on the majority of UK exports to the EU.

ETA _ For clarity just because a good is inelastic doesn't mean that price doesn't affect demand, it just means it affects demand at a lower rate.

My point was it affects sin items less....which you stated.

Aren't Germany's protectionism of its auto industry a tarriff in effect?

And Macron is definitely protectionist.
