Eddie Van Halen, Hall of Fame Guitarist Who Revolutionized Instrument, Dead at 65

Eddie Van Halen, the legendary guitar innovator and virtuoso who led Van Halen through five decades and three lead singers, establishing himself as one of the all-time great players in rock history, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 65.

“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” his son Wolfgang Van Halen wrote. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss.”

This surprised me today.
Probably one of my (and most people's) favorite and most inspirational guitarists.
He revolutionized electric distorted guitar beyond beyond what Hendrix started.

Sad sad day for rock.

Maybe not the first, maybe not the fastest, but pretty much my favorite practitioner or 'finger tapping' guitar leads.

Look up his dad. B &w videos of Eddie and Alex father....tapping a guitar. Late 40-50's

Dude was amazing talent, but considering the life lived in the 1980's I am honestly amazed he lived this long.

Still gone to soon, and music is worse for the loss.

I saw a tribute band 3 weeks ago named Completely Unchained. It was a great show. Long live the tribute bands!

Thank you Eddie your music played a lot of memorable moments in my life and was the reason I learned to play the guitar. You will be missed but never forgotten rock on my friend.
