Contact tracing has traced this to the debate setup stage before the president was ever there. The disease was already on-site. Cleveland Clinic was responsible for handling the testing of every single person on-site. All of them had to have a negative test.

Either someone botched the testing or someone who tested negative suddenly went positive in a few hours' time or someone was passing around contaminated stuff on purpose.

Also masks don't keep you from getting sick if someone around you has it. They *may* help keep a symptomatic person from spreading it as easily, but that's it. So mask or not, the president and his staffers weren't going to be protected from someone with the disease by wearing their own masks.

Possible someone intentionally contaminated the President's podium...prior to the debate.

Or in the water. You would think it would be bottled, but how hard would it be to tamper with that?

But I'm also not insane enough to vote for Biden, just like I couldn't support Hillary either. I know the policies they endorse mean more taxes and less freedom of choice in a lot of ways for myself and my family.

I likewise cannot support choices likely to only weaken the strongest opposition to those candidates making it more likely they get elected by default even if I don't directly vote for them.

These are the same people that suddenly decided that a cheap, easily available malaria drug that has been taken for several different uses by hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, all around the globe for decades suddenly become the most horrible thing since thalidomide because the president talked about its possibly properties as a part of an early therapy for COVID.

China did quarantine Wuhan, but only domestically. Flights from Wuhan to other areas of China were cancelled, but flights from Wuhan to other countries were in full operation. Trump implemented a travel ban from Wuhan to the US on January 31, long before the WHO or China would even admit that virus could be spread from human-human contact.

Did Trump downplay the danger at the time? Probably. Would any other world leader who cared about his people and was seeing what we now know he was seeing have done the same? Probably. Remember that at that time, Joe Biden was calling the travel ban "hysterically xenophobic," Nancy Pelosi was doing photo ops in Chinatown in California encouraging her supporters to come mingle without social distancing or face masks, Andrew Cuomo was saying that New York was essentially immune "because they're New Yorkers," Bill DeBlasio was encouraging New Yorkers to get out and enjoy the fine dining and crowded attractions in New York, and Dr. Anthony Fauci was saying there was absolutely no cause for alarm.

About half the New York/New Jersey deaths came about because Cuomo forced nursing homes to take infected patients, then refused to help them with PPE to protect the others there. Take those murdered seniors out of the numbers and our results have been pretty similar to other countries.

People do listen to leaders. Trump supporters have been very very vocal about the China virus.

I have, and I will continue to be vocal about the insane "solutions" that do not work. I have proven the lockdowns are ineffective using the CDC's own numbers several times on here already. I have expressed the same doubts about the face masks that medical experts have stated. I have agreed with some of the proposed recommendations, like hand-washing, isolation as much as possible for the high-risk, and attempts to not touch one's face. I strongly support someone who is ill taking some measures to self-isolate as much as practical. We have been doing that for the past 200 years at least, with pretty good results at containing spread of disease... but we have lately forgotten how to do such simple things, apparently.

That's not because Donald Trump said something. That's because I actually looked at and analyzed the science as it became available. It appears looking at and understanding science is completely opposite from "listening to the science."

Saying China did nothing to stop this disease from expanding past their borders is accurate. Saying Trump didn't do "enough" might be accurate in hindsight, but it is also at best ignorant and at worst partisan tomfoolery.

I said at the start we should isolate the vulnerable (like we're attempting to do with all) and work from their. Statistically it would've been easier to say 20-30% of our nation's are already ill.

Neither did I wish Boris Johnson ill when he was in the hospital. To be honest, I know little about him... there are enough problems with American politics to keep me well-satisfied, thank you very much. I figure you guys can handle how to run your country without my big nose butting in where it doesn't belong.

I suppose if one defined success as not spreading the virus, then yes, all have failed. I don't define success that way. This virus is so contagious, there is no way to keep it from spreading and still maintain any semblance of a society. The truth is that Trump was going to get it sooner or later. I'm pretty sure I have already had it... symptoms and severity were about right: high fever once day, then a continuation of a low-grade fever that I had already broken... that is unheard of for me. Cough? I have sinus issues anyway, so I wouldn't know if it caused a cough or not. Fatigue? Ha! Any more fatigued and I wouldn't have enough energy to type as it is! That's like spraying water on someone who is drowning.

You have a better than 50/50 chance of getting it as well. That's just a fact. Luckily, it is not as deadly as it could be; the vast majority who get it will survive just fine.

This is wisdom.

Most of the vulnerable already need assistance getting around day to day. They already have a caretaker. So it would be easier to have those caretakers exercise extreme caution and isolate the vulnerable otherwise than to try and isolate all of society. Eventually the virus will penetrate even those defenses, but the idea is that by the time it does there will be effective treatments available.

I was my mother's caretaker for many years. Were she still alive, I would be paranoid about this virus around her. I hold no one in contempt for being paranoid in a similar situation. However, it has done no good to close down all of society. The only thing that has accomplished is to place more people at risk for everything from pre-existing conditions that could not be treated by law to suicides from social isolation, to an increase in domestic and child abuse, to academically stunting our already under-educated youth. None of those are positives. As I have said before, more people will die from COVID-19 who never contract it than who do.

Agreed, but if it were only that simple!

At one time, we could have broken off trade with China easily. Today, not so much. China has cornered the market on many of the things we depend on. Rare earth metals, necessary for semiconductor technology, are only one example. They also produce many alloys exclusively and pretty much have the pharmaceutical market cornered so far as affordable generic drugs are concerned. The project I am working on now requires laboratory grade pure iron... that has to come from China. Even though it is made in small quantities in the West, the price is literally orders of magnitude more. I could not begin to assemble the apparatus for my project using Western materials, but using Chinese materials? No problem.

At least under Trump we are finally moving in the right direction with regards to China. I have no real issue trading with them as long as the trading is fair. It has not been fair, and has consistently worsened throughout the last several decades.
