There is a place for people whose primary motivator is a gauranteed paycheck: trade school.

College is supposed to primarily be a place to improve one's mind by following one's own intellectual curiosity, developing habits of mind along the way that will carry one through adulthood in whatever specific occupation they hold.

Who are you to decide what is useless?

Would you turn all colleges and universities into mere trade schools?

Who are you to decide what is useless?

Well, the thread is about the "public" paying for that useless crap so I am the guy who doesn't want to pay for a million idiots a year to attend. Let them pay for uselessness themselves.

If we wanted to subsidize doctors, surgeons, medical specialist, true engineers, and positions we desperately need in the country, maybe. Paying for uselessness is just plain stupid.

Believe it or not, I agree, free college should be limited to the high demand, high cost degrees with too few applicants in the real world. As you said -- medical professionals, engineers, etc.

Let the idiots get a useless degree in psychology, marketing, or gender studies with their own hundred thousand dollars that they will never be able to pay back. It would be cheaper to hand them a check and tell them to go to college or buy a car.... see how many buy a car

IMO, useless degrees you mentioned such as Gender Studies should be extremely expensive to achieve. They're wasted space in colleges, and they should cost a lot to make up for it. If you WANT to waste your life and money on a degree with little to no ROI, put your money where your mouth is on it and prove the dedication.

I agree with you to a point. I have been in IT for almost 20 years. I am at the max of my payscale, (132k). The issue is that even if you have the certifications, (which I have had a few in the past, I let them lapse) you can't get a management job, or higher without at least a bachelors.

As far as college goes. Having wasted my last 20 years of free time trying to get a degree, let me safely tell you, 1 its a waste of money, 2 its a waste of time, 3 the only way to get through a group project is that when forming the group, be a complete asshole and tell people you are going to work, and work hard, otherwise F off.

Sure sure. What you said makes sense. Free education bad because of left VS right.

And American higher education is now bad, since other nations aren't doing what they can to send their students to study in the US...

But your point is great because...tax payer money?

That phrase has lost all meaning. Most universities are state sponsored though, I.e. Why we Don have free education in the first place..

Makes perfect sense, and you win!

Down with free education because of the left v right tripe.

OH yes. The avatar is lovely ain't it? The dems racist tripe has too lost its meaning. Repetition doesn't equal persuasion. The dems are the kkk 😍☺️ keep repeating it it will be true today!

It's the only flag that matters today. Wink wink.

Only in America free higher education is frowned upon for a first world country.

And look at our society 😘😘🇺🇸💕

Rome never looked better.

RE: the "free" education being demanded by the leftist in the US. They love to bring up the fact that many countries offer a "free" college education, but they disingenuously leave out the fact that this foreign college education is restricted to good students, is means tested, and that not all courses are eligible. They don't tell the whole story because their version of a "free" college would have little or no grade requirements, would not be means tested, and the course studies would not be restricted. So little antifa Billy, who lives in his rich parent's basement, could burn up the taxpayers money for a decade working towards his Transgendered Women's Studies.

You are highly mistaken. Much our management team has an AS or less. Some SVP's have less. You may need to move to aspire higher.

First of all college is free, if you are smart enough and work hard enough. If your college wasn’t free and you don’t understand why, you failed the first reason why it’s free.

If one wants to make the arguement the whole college experience is priceless...ok

If you are paying for the most expensive streaming survive you ever gong to have, that’s not an experience. For the most part, If you are Streaming a named school (read expensive) instead of taking a community college (Read cheap). Then again, you failed rule 1 again.

Hard work = freedom.
Not free = free.
Is experience priceless ?
Surviving the gong-show is not an experience.
Expensive stuff is more expensive than cheap stuff.
You have twice failed a rule : that you didn't know existed.

Doublespeak = doublespeak.

Back in the boomers from what I understand, a High School Dipolima could been a Doctor. Now everyone has to have ond, even garbage men as it been mentioned a bunch of times to me.

As a buddy put, it who you know, even thoigh experience seems more valued. No company wants to train anyone from the bottom up anymore, like in previous generations. My dad couldnt add two plus two, but he could he good at what he does.

So they kind of depricate in value the more everyone has one, and then there supply in demand. As cutting as edge as somethings could be, will there be an actual need for it, spexially with Automony rearing it head in the coming decades.

All the while, some of most successful entrepenuers dont even have a high school dipolima...not hating, rather just stupified about it.

We will all be sorry we didnt pay for those " How to Survive a Flesh eating Zombie Apocalypse" courses, or didnt put into the early childhood ciriculums, or those suppelmentry courses.
