"Legend says the fire must not go out tonight," he said.

The desert silence was even more deafening and frightening than the loudest sound. "Or we're doomed."

The landscape was barren, the last scraps of dried brush having been gathered. Cold was setting in.

"We can burn—"
"—You'll freeze."

The last remnants of fuel burned down, and the embers began dying, glowing less.

The shadows on the rocks, once harmless, looked even more menacing as the light died.

"Pray it doesn't come. Pray on your life."

He paused, "But It has already come. This is our hell."
