...as a German I was warned about these exact people. I watched them in old film footage, my sandal wearing teacher told us never to let this happen again and to stand up when books are burned, statues are toppled and people identified as inhuman and intimidated by mobs.

Sounds like your husband and I share a bit in common although my hair is not quite black but very dark brown, blue eyes from my fathers side detract a bit from a stereotypical Maltese image. I also speak it and have a great grasp of the history thanks to my Nan.

I have experience from my youth in dealing with being bullied. I don't think I'd comply, but I also don't think I'd offer up defiance. In the back of my mind I'd be thinking how far would they really take it in such an obviously public place in front of so many other people, but at the same time, I wouldn't be looking to try to set them off, either.
