The color of the cloud makes me think sulfur or iron were also involved. The more you think about it. There's no telling what all was in that area. Obviously they're owning up to seized explosives and such. Someone needs to check and see when the last ship from Iran arrived, they bring it all thru these ports.

That might have been before the big one if he was that close and was able to upload a video... The building next to the explosion, which looked like the one he was standing on, was hollowed out in the aftermath.

Major General Abbas Ibrahim, head of Lebanon's General Directorate of General Security, reportedly said in a televised interview that the container that was the source of the initial fire and explosion contained confiscated “high explosive materials" and that it would be "naive to describe such an explosion as due to fireworks."

Head of General Security says the blast was caused by a fire in a depot of highly explosive material, including Sodium nitrate, at Beirut's port. He said that material was confiscated from a ship months ago and stored there. #Lebanon

Sodium Nitrate is not usually combustible on it's own. It is an oxidizer which require fuel and a catalyst ( Carbon, Sulfur in simple gunpowder but usually metallic powders in other explosives)

Correct.
One possibility would be fuel oil in the ship leaking into the holds where the sodium nitrate was stored.

a reply to: LSU2018 It definitely is before the big one. That guy has some balls. He must have got out of there just in time. The only other scenario I could see is if someone found his phone and uploaded it, but I doubt it. Not with all the chaos going on there.

An audio message from the wife of an official (private WhatsApp group) claims the blast was due to 'utter negligence'.
Ammonium Nitrate was 'salvaged from a sinking ship' about 12 years ago and stored at 'Hangar 12, one of #Beirut harbour's biggest'.

I think so as well. Even crude oil would have a high sulfur content, let alone the carbon in oil. That could have been the other piece required to make this a catastrophic explosion. Wow, what a shock wave...
The fireworks may have just been ancillary and stored in boxes in the warehouse as well.
Great job of separation of materials that just love to interact....

Well i was just told that the U.N. is releasing papers on some guy named Hahrari tomarow. I don't know who this is and don't know if i spelled his name right.

Edit: also it's being purported that the warehouse was stored with illegal explosives and not a fireworks factory.

Rafik Hariri......he was assassinated in a truck bomb in Beirut in 2005.

Wow that'd explain a lot. I thought Ammonium Nitrate required an extra 'ingredient' to make for a proper explosive (can't mention what it is outside Academia in the UK due to anti-terror laws). May well be getting it mixed up with a different N fertiliser bomb though a fireworks factory would have a massive stockpile of the ingredient (in it's most explosive form) to create blue fireworks.

To put it in perspective - the IRA's biggest bombs were around 600kg, Timothy McViegh used 2.2 tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate in the Oklahoma City bombing - this is an enermous explosion/yield if an accurate ammount. Sadly it's hard not to see a death toll in the 1000s, if it's lower thsn 500 it'd be very 'lucky'.

Wonder if there is any truth to this? It is in the twitter feed link from the OP.

exact same location, not sure on the timestamp.

So you build and store fireworks next to an old shipment of Nitrate? you confiscated? I don't think so.

Could those be small arm rounds?

Then a very very big explosion....

BBC just reported that some have said it maybe an israeli attack-and that the israeli military have responded by saying that they "do not comment on what foriegn news reports say."

Well, that sounds bloody ominous to me..

I know any large enough explosion looks like a nuke, and this one is no diiferent:

twitter.com...

There were fires first. You would hear the bomb falling in or a missile screaming in, if it was an Israeli attack. This was an Iranian weapons shipment that blew in the harbor. You can hear the small arms rounds cooking off just prior. Hezbollah is to blame for storing this crap so close to downtown.

Just shooting the breeze, but do you think that the chemical smoke being dumped into the atmosphere, from the fireworks, may have provided a literal smokescreen that covered the flash of a battlefield nuke, to a point? I've no idea if that's plausible, but it just crossed my mind after reading your reply.

If it was a nuclear weapon you would not see it on regular cameras. Everything electrical would be toast. People would be running through the streets on fire or just flat vaporized if it was a nuke and those buildings would not be left standing. Definitely not that hotel near by.

On this one you can see what looks like fireworks going off right before the BIG UN.

twitter.com...

Trying to find some pics of the aftermath closer to the epicenter.

Definitely not fireworks. Those a small Arms from an Iranian ship that Israel missed. Israel has been blowing up everything sent to Hezbollah via ground so they might have had a spy or two discover it and toss a flare or two inside to get a fire going and then nothing could be done to save the terrorist harbor.

Beirut used to be a beautiful place until these Hezbollah terrorist ruined Lebanon.
