On this issue I am glad to hear Trump taking a stand for ALL American people. Can anyone suggest reasons why we should not all support this measure of his?

Even as this bit of news is several days old, there is new news coming out today about this.

A White House meeting with top pharmaceutical executives that President Donald Trump promised for Tuesday is off, five industry sources familiar with discussions told POLITICO. Three said the drug-pricing discussion was canceled because the major drug lobbies, reeling from Friday’s cluster of executive orders on the topic, refused to send any members.

Most often it is very difficult for me to applaud Trumps actions so today I would like to thank Big Pharma for offering me an opportunity to give him kudos.

It would be shocking if he ever did the pre-work.

Its with issues like this one that make it obvious which politicians are beholden to a lobby.

Trump isnt.

Insurance is the same, the insurance companies own the politicians, so theyre strongarmed into keeping things as profitable to the insurance companies as possible.

Trump, like him, or hate him, thumbs his nose at the lobbies. For that, he continues to recieve my vote.

I'm old enough to remember when health insurance was not that common, a doctors visit was less than 50 bucks now with insurance they get 100 bucks a visit cause the insurance will cover it.

I have made my disdain for Trump known, but I have to hand it to him. This is a good thing he's doing.

Yup ... Yup. You are spot-on. Healthcare charges 'whatever the market will bear' ... so considering that insurance is the majority of the market, and if insurance just auto-pays, costs inflate waaaay up. Sucks truly.

And since insurance companies are limited by statute to profits as a percentage of revenue, they have every incentive to keep prices higher rather than lower.

I think it's well long past the time that drug companies should have been brought to order, and not just them, there is a whole gamut of medical resource that should be included...that's another discourse though.

As for a Trump rationale, I withhold comment as yet.

In his live announcement last week (not covered by CNN/MSNBC. Only FoxNews), the President put the Pharmaceutical industry on notice. Saying that he has Executive Order #4 ready to implement, if they do not work with him. Gave a deadline of August 20th (i believe). "You don't want me to implement Executive Order #4", President Trump warned big Pharma.

E.O. number #4 must be a humdinger, whatever it is.

I am against Trump on this.
The market should decide pricing.
Not the Govt.

It’s quite astounding that these companies will still make money hand over fist even with the prices dropping and they’re still going to throw little tantrums. I hope Trump goes at this like a rabid animal and doesn’t back down.

Basically Trump is giving big pharma a month to work out an acceptable deal otherwise on Aug 24 at high noon the fourth EO goes into effect which I'm sure won't be in big Pharma favor. Sounds like prescription drugs may come from other 'allied' countries. He should also ban all their poison ads on network tv.

This should be how it's done, but when two of the three factors in market costs are being altered artificially, then yes the Government should step in.

This quote from the article is telling.

A PhRMA spokesperson painted the White House talks as a distraction. "The president’s plan to import policies from socialized health care systems abroad is disrupting our work [on Covid-19 therapies] and diverting our focus away from those life-saving efforts," the spokesperson said. "We remain willing to discuss ways to lower costs for patients at the pharmacy counter. However, we remain steadfastly opposed to policies that would allow foreign governments to set prices for medicines in the United States."

So, they're willing to lower prices BUT "blah blah". Who cares what they oppose. They are a little too accustomed to their pet politicians doing what they're told.

Then they have the audacity to imply this meeting on drug prices would somehow be taking up the valuable time of their vaccine team. Pure BS excuse.

Other than — this stuff is usually hashed out privately.

It doesn’t make the Pharma look bad IMO. It makes Trump look like he tried to bully them — and they said NO.
