NBC, in a masterful effort to justify both the public hysteria over COVID and hysteria over those damn confederates, has presented an article about how COVID has killed more people than the rebels did in the civil war.

More Americans have died of COVID-19 than Union soldiers were killed on the battlefield during the Civil War. It’s a sobering statistic that comes at a time when Confederate statues are being toppled across the country.

It didn't let us know how COVID stacks up against other scary things like sharks, assault weapons, and the boogaloo boys.

More information relevant to COVID.

By contrast, 140,414 Union soldiers fell while fighting rebel forces led by Confederate generals like Stonewall Jackson and racist politicians like Jefferson Davis, whose effigies are being evicted from the public square as part of the nationwide wave of protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, a Black man, beneath the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer in May.

More relevant information - tragedy strikes.

Two Major League Baseball games scheduled for Monday were canceled because of the coronavirus

Masks shouldn't be politicized, but just so you know republicans are killing their citizens.

By contrast, most of Texas’ deaths have been reported in recent weeks, after Gov. Greg Abbott began reopening the state even as the number of new cases was climbing. It wasn’t until three weeks ago that Abbott, a Republican and Trump ally, issued a mandate requiring Texans to wear masks while in public places.

Some astute data analysis.

Texas now has 395,242 confirmed cases, which puts the state on track to eclipse New York's total numberof new infections, the NBC News figures show.

Hmmm, the total number of confirmed cases puts Texas on track to eclipse NY new cases. LOL, numbers. I would hope that total cases eclipse new cases daily, but the complicated math to figure out if that's true probably isn't covered in journalism school.

Then after all that we discover Texas isn't in first place. WUT?

New York has 417,894 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic as of Monday morning. California now has the most cases in the nation, with 459,576, and Florida is a close second with 423,855.

So Texas is third and Florida is 4th.

I asked a mathematics expert to run some numbers.

California population 40 million/ cases 459,576/ % infected 1.1
New York population 20 million/ cases 417,894/ % infected 2.0
Texas population 30 million/ cases 395,242/ % infected 1.3
Florida population 21 million/ cases 423,855/ % infected 2.0

Yeah yeah yeah, new cases are increasing in Texas and Florida, but new cases aren't stopping in NY and California.

NBC should be aired on Comedy Central.

Lies....damned lies....and statistics.

WTG, NBC for muddying the waters enough to get YOUR message out there... if only it were the truth, then we could call it news....

When presenting the numbers as a percentage, the decimal needs to be moved to the right by 2 places. Thus infected rates are:
California - 1.1%
New York - 2.0%
Texas - 1.3%
Florida - 2.0%

Jesus, you're right and I'm making fun of NBC!

I've already corrected 2 other errors.

Thank you!

as I pointed out in another thread, the normal death rate in the US daily is about 7 thousand to 8 thousand even before covid
that means at least 1,260,000 died from the beginning of this year, no one knows how many numbers from this were donated to the COVID 19 casualties to inflate the numbers.

Are they comparing all the pneumonia // flu deaths as well ?

Those are more than COVID19(84) deaths I believe not to mention all the "fake/mistake" reports 🤣🆘🤣

Does that mean we can compare what BLM and ANTIFA has done to the North raping and burning the south during the same period?

NBC's lying

For 110 years, the numbers stood as gospel: 618,222 men died in the Civil War, 360,222 from the North and 258,000 from the South — by far the greatest toll of any war in American history.

With all the uncertainties, Dr. Hacker said, the data suggested that 650,000 to 850,000 men died as a result of the war; he chose the midpoint as his estimate.

Most people aren't losing any sleep over Civil War casualties or Covid casualties.

There are thousands of things that kill people.

7200 people die in the United States every single day.

Still not more than medical malpractice at 250,000 per year...or tobacco at 480,000
