I'm 39, I'm at the cusp of the age for military service

I think I want to join the military. I've motivated myself to be healthy and lose weight. I'm 39 years old, and just weighed in under 200lb for the first time since I was in my twenties.

I've been motivated for a while to just be a better person in general, but I think its about time to dedicate myself to something.

I'm skilled in many things, I can fix anything, I can drive an 18-wheeler, I can make sure electricity doesn't kill you.

I think its time in my life to do something, and I'm thinking military.

Any tips/comments/suggestions?

Don’t.
That’s my advice.
After 40 everything starts becoming a problem Like muscles and joints.

If you want to do it then you should do it. If you are in shape you won’t have an issue with your age.

I've spent the last 6 months exerting every muscle I have to get myself in shape for something.

I want to do something different.

I don't want to be deployed.

Next year I become ineligble, and at 39 I'm pretty damn sure I can put some 20ish kids to shame.

Try ufc fighting...lol

Do it if you want but get ready for your drill instructor to be younger than you..

I'm literally at my last year to be able to do it, I just found that out today.

I'm passed the age requirement for most services, and i didn't know that.

I want to join because i think it will challenge me, and I'm pretty sure I'd be a good addition.

Then again, being an intelligent smartass might be the thing that gets my ass kicked, but whatever.

Ive been motivated lately in my life to do something, maybe military is it.

I'll be smarter than him/her

I'll follow orders, that's just what you do.

I don't like fighting. I'm a brown belt in BJJ, but that aspect of me is always peaceful, unless you cross the line.

I'm just thinking it's time to do something different.

There is a lot I can do without making this move, but I think I want to do this.

Haaaha sorry

I was 28 and close to your weight (190)and its a lot of heavy lifting running w rucks et
Please don't do it

Yes you will lose weight but your joints and your mindset at your age are detriments.
It was hard enough nearing 30 imagine nearing 40,
I'm sorry my dear but I saw ppl your age having spinal conpactions and bone problems.
Its not worth it

I physically exert myself on a daily basis. I typically go above and beyond daily.

Physical requirements aren't an issue at all.

I feel healthier today going on 40 next year than I did on my 29th birthday.

For the US Military I think your only option at age 39 without prior military service is the Air Force.
Call a recruiter and see what they say but I think it's probably unlikely.

Do it, you'll regret it if you don't by the sounds of it.

If you don't want to be in service maybe working as a firefighter is something. Tough drills, hard work, challenges and mostly doing it to do good.

And fire is cool.

I can attest being in the military in your 40’s is hard. Your joints, back, will hate you for it. It will be an uphill battle for you to get in at this point in your life. You say you don’t like fighting and don’t want to deploy. I wouldn’t go near the Navy, Army, or Marines with a 10 foot pole. Try the Air Force. The other three branches will deploy you in a New York minute to some hellhole.

a reply to: [post=25295895]Vector99[/postAt. 39 for the air Force you might be a bit too old as an air Force veteran you might have like a 9-month waitlist to get into the air force but at your age I would suggest the air Force and I would suggest going in as a cook there's reasons for that but if you get in as a cook you might be able to get into the airforce much quicker and those that are in the ab training to be a cook or generally a few years older than the average enlisted person going through the training to become a chef

Completely agree with this ^^^^^^^^^!

You could probably waiver your way into the Airforce, just depends on what you want your job to be. Do some research. If you have any college you can rank up pretty fast.

Just know this, you're initially going to be dealing with a bunch of kids that are gunna think you weird or a narc, but don't let that discourage you. Had a guy in BMT who was 39 with a waiver and he went Reserve. He finished BMT and went back home to Hawaii!😉

He was an odd man out, but he had a GOOD plan.

That's key.

You're short on time so get on it!

Solid housing, food, pay, "bumper to bumper" medical benefits through the most health critical time in your life?? That's not a bad deal.

That's the start of a good plan, just gotta iron out your choices.

I can tell you as a vet it's not what you think it is.

You'll be dealing with guys who are half your age with more experience and brass than you, and unless you go into an administration role it will destroy your body.

You may say you can deal with younger people having rank on you, but I saw firsthand people who said that and then let everything a younger NCO said get under their skin.

You'll be surrounded by teenagers and people in their early twenties saying and doing the dumbest things possible. And you can't avoid it. You'll be forced to be around it.

The healthcare sucks. Expect to be told to take motrin for everything. Dental sucks too. They'd rather pull a tooth than fill it.

Try doing reserves or guard if you can. That way you can stay home and be near and protect your friends and family. And you'll be called into service for things that matter like natural disasters and humanitarian aid.

You do not want to go into a battlefield or warzone at your age.

You will not get any credence for your age. You'll have NCOs, senior enlisted, and officers who are younger than you and will take no pity in you when you start complaining about joints and body parts hurting.

If you don't want to deploy stay the hell out of the military.

That's big boy stuff.

Did you really want to be deployed?

I didn't say I wouldn't, I simply said I prefer not to.

Thank you to everyone else by the way for your responses. I talked to my buddy who's retiring from the airforce in 6 months with full pension, he said it's best if I take my ambition to the local air force recruiting office and start from there.

I'll be doing that on Monday, I'll update after
