As a resident millennial, and someone who has used reddit quite a bit for years, I'll give my take.

I think it's important first to understand how reddit works. Reddit is filled with subreddits, and the structure is kind of similar to ATS in a few regards. Think of each subreddit as a different forum on here. There are rules to content posted to each sub pertaining to that sub's subject matter (like here). Also, each sub has it's own mods. While each sub can have it's own rules, there are certain site wide rules that have to be adhered, or your sub can get quarantined and or shut down.

Now, before we continue, I'll do my best to show I try my best to look at things for the way they are.

Is reddit for the most part left leaning? IMO, absolutely. In fact, there are few places there I will discuss politics, though if you have a good sense of humor r/PoliticalCompassMemes is a riot. There is also free speech there, so depending on the context, and as long as it's an implied joke, I see the N bomb, fa**ot and many other expletives used frequently, and sometime rarely even tastefully. Aside from that sub though, almost all subs are left leaning echo chambers who will downvote you to hell if you even imply you're questioning the left. I've gotten banned from one for implying maybe violence against the Catholic school boys at DC is messed up, lol.

Do I think we should have avenues for free speech? Absolutely. But private companies should be able to decide their platform and content if they want to generate revenue. To be honest, many subreddits, while annoying and echo chamber like, have far less rules than ATS. But both decide where the lines are drawn.

All that said, some subs have gotten completely out of control since they are self moderated, and often times the mods agree with said sub's ideology. So the three biggest no no's are calls to violence (this one often gets ignored, and many left leaning subs get away with it because "hyperbole"), and the two ones that actually get enforced which is doxxing and brigading. The latter is when you call for your sub to go into others to muck them up or troll. You can do that on your own time (and likely get banned from that sub), but if you openly call for another sub to team up against it, you're going to get shut down eventually.

Usually the mods are given warnings from the reddit staff to get their ship together before further action is taken.

Now, we can all admit reddit is for the most part more welcoming to those from the left. But they don't censor any more than other websites. They honestly probably censor less (though subs can ban you, you can still speak freely on many and probably just get downvoted to hell).

r/ChapoTrapHouse, a popular far lefty sub got quarantined for brigading r/conservatives. You can read the r/SubredditDrama thread here.

We could go on and on about this. At the end of the day, people are only mad because they are mad their side is getting the bad end of a somewhat understandable double standard there. They wouldn't be mad if it was happening to r/socialism. Many here would say they don't believe in corporate control of censorship, but many of these are the same ones on (IMO) the wrong end of the net neutrality debate. That has the very real possibility of the internet turning into what corporations want it to. As it stands now, websites have the freedom to decide what is on their business's site. If you don't like it, go to their competitors.

I like reddit for content other than politics, it's great for that... though there are still some good places like PoliticalCompassMemes, which is honestly more civil than any other forum I've seen, while being blunt in a joking manner.

And that's exactly why I will never be a part of that clusterF. I checked it out, it's similar to some other forums I've used in the past but until they get a grip on reality (they never will) I have no use for that site. Much like Twitter. And Tik Tok, whatever that is. Never been there, don't plan on it.

Right, nothing to see here. History isn't being altered or erased. Heads of government aren't being lauded or eviscerated. Free speech is being upheld no matter how its interpreted.

The community has consistently hosted and upvoted more rule-breaking content than average (Rule 1), antagonized us and other communities (Rules 2 and 8), and its mods have refused to meet our most basic expectations. Until now, we’ve worked in good faith to help them preserve the community as a space for its users—through warnings, mod changes, quarantining, and more.

Though smaller, r/ChapoTrapHouse was banned for similar reasons: They consistently host rule-breaking content and their mods have demonstrated no intention of reining in their community.

To be clear, views across the political spectrum are allowed on Reddit—but all communities must work within our policies and do so in good faith, without exception.

having come from a communist dictatorship country i can tell you first hand the importance of free speech is only truly appreciated after experiencing not having it.
