It’s an unknown mystery with no real convincing hypothesis and so I wouldn’t like to speculate. It certainly opens up the floor to many possibilities, including conscious interference rather than natural evolution.

Even Einstein, one of the prophets of science never dismissed the idea of creation or intelligent design. I’d say he understood the physics underpinning reality more acutely than both of us combined.
