They think the depictions of Jesus like that go back to Byzantine art that used to be Roman depictions of gods and godesses. It likely got repurposed and the affectation and style spread all over Europe.

It would make sense given that the Byzantines were the western half of the Roman Empire and widely embraced Christianity suddenly. Then you have the association with Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire after that.
