You know, I've been considering (at a glacial pace) starting a firewood business. The prospect of making my own hours is appealing, of course, but I have always truly enjoyed cutting firewood.

How did you get into doing it? Did you lay out cash for a hydraulic splitter or any other special tools?

Through our first insurance payout for the 'contents' after the fire. We lost not only a lot of our personal effects but a great deal of machinery, including our saws, tools, trailers, ride on mowers, truck and log splitter. All the out buildings containing these burnt to the ground.

So apart from the necessities like reconnecting power and water we purchased a new log splitter, some more saws, a small truck and a better trailer. We dragged all the fallen and burnt timber up from the destroyed forest and dropped a couple of trees that appeared dead or dangerous. Cut and billet it. I'm careful to split away burnt or dirty outside timber which we use ourselves. Customers don't like charcoal covered wood so we use it. Burns hot in our fireplace. Then we split the cleaner bits up in too sizes and types and pile them up.

'Truey' drives to work in the little truck with a load and sells it. She has done 3 trips just this weekend and I have another I think today but they are coming to our block to load their ute up. The size of the wood can be critical. Normally a foot to 18 inches but we had to deliver a load last week some 85 kilometres away. The size of the wood had to be cut and split to fit into a small potbelly, so 6 inch cut by no more than 4 inch wide. You can appreciate that is a lot of cutting and splitting so I resorted to the axe in the end to get the splits right. You can appreciate that costs more for the time, usage of the tools and delivery distance.

We have done some bigger loads with truck and large trailer. A of course there is some pocket money in that and I decrease the cost of the volume because it's one delivery.

The little business is word of mouth only but if we are travelling up to 85 kilometres that form of advertising has certainly worked for us. Most important part keeping everything well lubed and the saws chains sharpened to the right angles for the different timber. Makes for quick, efficient cutting.

Hope that helps mate. People like their wood in winter,

Kind regards,

Bally

*Knock knock*
*Heaves open the heavy oak door and peeks around*

Good evening one,
Good evening all.
I’ve come a long way,
just out for a stroll.
Not a long walk,
but enough to be bold.
I heard the sad news,
read the story that was told.

What a fine shed!
What a fine place!
Built with skilled hands,
with nothing gone to waste!
Would gladly wait my turn,
to sit by the fire.
To join you good folks a while,
should here be retired…

My first time here,
but had to return.
This place from another time,
in the hopes I might learn.
Of stories, some secrets,
whispered and shared.
Good company and drinks,
in the cool night air.

Familiar some are,
from time that has passed
I watched from afar,
but followed the path.
Through the woods near the lake,
left at the falls.
May I have some broth please?
Does it have long to boil?

There’s purpose in everything,
or so I am told.
Tools of the mind,
never grow old.
Of legends, of heroes,
of friends near and far.
Led to this dwelling place,
by a graceful Night Star.

Can we celebrate the now?
of what is and went before?
A toast to one and all,
and hope for many more!
For here amongst the twilight,
time itself is never late.
I’m sorry if I disturbed you,
I saw the lamp set by the gate.

Some whisky to take the edge off,
Would you dance by the light of the moon?
What will be and comes to pass,
will always be too soon.
I can offer only pennies,
sorry neither are silver or gold.
Is it ok if I stay a while?
I’m not ready to hit the road.

With respect and regards,

Earthanaut

Thankyou for my 1st Star!! ...much obliged to you!!

Yes indeed!... I am sure I had more posts before the site went through a refresh way back?
Most of my contributions were pre-2012 on a number of threads, but the post numbers now are what they are.

I enjoy my time here...have spent so much time reading the threads across a range of topics in different forums...
So much so I accidentally became a serial lurker!!

I'm here to stay but hope we all find a new home if we are evicted... that will be a day of days.
Hope somebody points the way

I will keep an eye out for you and look forward to the next time
Thanks again.

With respect and best regards,

Earthanaut

Oh!

That was not "only" writing. I see your post as as art.

Which is pleasant, because i woke up with a little bit wrong foot and now you fixed me.

Even my morning coffee tastes better now.

Thank you

Wishing everyone in the Shed a good evening, good morning, or a good whatever time of the day it is for you. I wish I could stay for the coffee but it is way to late for me.

Cheers

Thanks for the compliments ...much obliged to you!!

It's my own writing but I'm not a writer by any stretch of the imagination... can't remember a time when I have sat down and wrote something like that.

I only wrote it a couple of hours ago, so didn't think of it as art, but I'm glad you enjoyed it though!!

Hope you slept well ready for the day... keep the coffee coming , pull up a chair and take the weight off your foot

With respect and best regards,

Earthanaut

I finally noticed you were on there when I went down the member alphabet on that site LOL. It's still very small, but I'm glad the secondary back up is there. Who knows what will happen to ATS but it seems the owners are done.

In Dark mode, Gordis site isn't much different. But no "recent pages" to look for and other unfamiliar things like quoting text are not the same. BUT I'm impressed a similar place exists without the seemingly exaggerated costs to keep ATS afloat.

I guess as that site grows, we'll see.

Hey Wookie!

On the other site... ALL of the recent posts appear on the front page chronologically (latest ones at the top) so you never miss a thing if you log on regularly!
All of the other topics are listed immediately below that (also on the front page).
It's actually REALLY easy once you get used to it.

PS - There are THREE big rabbits chasing one another around my back garden just now.... it's very distracting!!

You know what's up.
Don't tease me. This isn't cool. You....I am sad.

I don't know silly - that's why I asked. (I thought I was being nice tbh.)
Is it the potential closure here?

Like I said, it's the PEOPLE who make it, and we'll find a way to keep it.

((((Hugs))))

***Double-Entendre warning.... Double-Entendre warning***

Who was it once said (in response to receiving an enthusiastic round of applause at their arrival on stage):
"Thank You! There's nothing I like better than a warm hand on my entrance!"
It was Julian Clary if I remember correctly!
