He banned slave importation in Virginia 1778 just two years after our independence and later as a criminal act as president.

In 1784, Jefferson proposed federal legislation banning slavery in the New Territories of the North and South after 1800, which failed to pass Congress by one vote.

We are talking about a person that was working in the right direction 80 plus years before it actually happened.

And there's worse.

You are trying to apply today's morality on everything in the past and it doesn't work. The west and particularity Europe viewed much of the rest of the world as savages, so this was a truism for them. I don't think a term like racism was even a concept back then.

Why does any of this have any relevance today other than to remind us of less enlightened times?

There is slavery going on right now around the world and if these clowns put half as much energy into real life issues then we just might have a chance of making a difference.

Don't get me wrong, police brutality is an issue but defacing pieces of stone and brass ain't solving sh!t.

You just said it, there is slavery going on right now, and yes there is, in many millions of people.
Most countries have abolished slavery in the not so distant past, however there is, much disparity in how any particular country's laws are covering the singularity of slavery...since it is not a singular by any means...but's that's all according to how you view slavery.
However here, it is a discourse of African slavery in America, and the history of African slavery, and how Africans brought in as slaves were viewed by America's founders....to put it bluntly, they had a value, $$$$.
Slavery today, is exactly the same meme, no matter the currency.

So, why the specific monuments...man of the day thingy's, without the 'caveats'

Who do you want? Portuguese, British, Spanish, Spanish African Conquistadors, who were not slaves, Was it 400 hundred years of slavery, or was it less?...what do you want?

It's quite simple, slavery is not dead..not by a long shot, exactly that is not an answer, not by you, not by wide-eyes.

Slavery makes money now, as it did then, the ones that make the money now are presumably still living, the most prominent difference is that there are not many statues in vogue for them, and likely won't be.

You compare apples with oranges.

Please explain to me how, tearing down a statue and reducing someone down to a slave owner, that has been dead for a very long time, helps any of the slaves around the world?

For you the world is always black and white, right? Someone is either good or bad. It does not matter what those persons did for your country. Yeah, labels here we are again.
