I almost put this in the RANT section because ... well just because it is getting stupid out there. How long before our reality itself gets pulled out from beneath our feet and we are left with only what the internet feels that we should know or believe? How long ? A mass mandela effect as it were run by god knows who or what and it seems to be speeding up as we consume what they offer largely without thought.

Yeah I did but it seems for a while they were gone (dont have any proof although it would not surprise me at all as it seemed to have been from google itself and may have been a type of attack where people flag images for removal) But this is more about the big picture here. reply to: UpIsNowDown

the wiki article - " winston churchill " - which the soure you use links to , has had a large number of edits - today - is it possible - that an " uder edit " wiki articl will not be returned correctly - as its uncertain what the new edit will say // contain ?

i am suspicious of claims " they removed // cencored ........................ " - but now its back for " reasons"

i have - over the years - searched for content i " knew " was there - but it could not be found - teh WW is a hugge beast - and naturally prone to gremlins from time to time

claiming that things are the nefereious cencorship of " them " - is often ludicous

Not surprising there are a hell of a lot of PRETEND good people that like to attack our nation and it's history and Wicki is far from immune to there lies and editing.

They accuse us of some of the worst crimes in history, some refer back to Kenya and it's war of independence claiming we did terrible thing's to the Kenyan's but you know I knew an old soldier that served there during those troubles, he saw some bloody terrible thing's too.

Called out to a white farmer's home he found the man dead with his penis cut off and his wife also dead with the man's penis sown into her mouth (it appeared they had raped and tortured both of them), this was by those people we have just paid bloody compensation to for our supposed wrongdoing's against them.

I could go on and on and on and on.

Wicki is not British, it included people from all over the world and many claim offense against our nation never admitting there own culpability in the period's of trouble they caused.

Another claim that is often wrongly made is that we British INVADED India, actually we did not, the private enterprise known as the British East India Company had a huge army of mercenary's all Indian under the leadership of a few British officers whom were employee's of the East India Company and it's shareholders - whom were not all British - and not the British government though they were a controlling shareholder - so too were some of the Indian royal family's.

They never invaded ANY Indian states except if I recall one or two that had invaded other states were they had been already INVITED in, and a history fact is that when the East India company rolled it's army of native Indian's and (mostly) English officers into these states the local people would almost always celebrate and cheer the arrival of the liberators as they were seen, since the English - albeit a private company - brought with them laws that were better than they had before, ended torture for the most part - it did happen under British rule but was far less often and far less brutal.

So how did we end up sticking people on cannon's and blowing them up, well it all happened when the so called Indian mutiny took place, note this was not an INDIAN mutiny but an ISLAMIC uprising, it was the displacement of the ISLAMIC leaders that the other Indian's had been cheering so much when the East India company had come into those kingdom's because the Hindu's, Buddhists, Jains and other people had suffered terribly under the Islamic rule and had almost no right's under it, but of course the ISLAMISTS wanted us out, it came to a head in the Indian mutiny, there was a fort with a lot of English woman and children and the leaders of the Islamist army promised safe passage but it was a ruse to take control of the fort, as the woman and children sailed down the river they raped and massacred them.

When word of this got back to England it sparked public outrage and the government had no choice but to act, we sent the English army to support the beleaguered east empire company's private army - which was holding it's ground but had lost territory to the resurgent Islamic uprising (during which the Islamists massacred hundreds of thousands perhaps even millions of Hindu's, Buddhists and Jains.

In disgust at what the Islamists had done and to make an example one form of execution for these vile men was to strap them to the front of a cannon and blow them to pieces, painless and relatively humane compared to some of the thing's they had done.

But of course we have NEW AGE twisters of history that throw this back at us today claiming we were NOT GOOD, WE RAPED AND PILLAGED THERE COUNTRY's etc, mostly lies but not without some justification, we do still have some Hindu statues in the British museum - lucky we got them and not the Islamists eh!.

We do have one blight that stands out above all other's, actually two, we invented the concentration camp which is shameful and a true stain upon our history (the Boar War), we also used the first bombing of a civilian target when a plane in Ireland dropped hand grenades on an Irish village 'suspected' of harbouring Insurgent's but if I remember correctly it was orchestrated by there fellow Irish man who just happened to be from the protestant community and nothing to do with the British government or even the military chain of command though it too goes down as a blight upon our history.

Wicki is not British

Good observation.

Wiki is organized by languages. What is not so well known is that not all the language versions are "equal".

The "en" version is by far the most widely read and edited. And so, it is also the version most attacked with propaganda for reasons of commerce, religion, politics, ideology ... you name it.

More tellingly, some Wiki versions, like the "de" version, are much more controlling of content, and, demanding of good sources. And the editors of those versions are not so open to the propagation of extreme viewpoints in the name of political correctness.

Been there, experienced it. The "en" version has huge issues.

Governments have been putting forward made up versions of reality for a very long time.
Big tech has exasperated the problem massivley.
Its a global thing, and no one really knows what is real anymore.

A good documentary film about this topic is "Hypernormalisation" by Adam Curtis.
Well worth watching (as are all of his films IMO).

Sadly they were real but not the death camps of the NAZI's don't confuse the two, they were however responsible for the death's of thousands of Boer (mostly of Dutch and German ancestry) men, woman and children since they consisted of just a barbed wire fence with guards, no shelter and no sanitation and in some cases no water or food, remember the concept of human rights in the 1890's did not mean the same as it does today.

Many English regarded the Boers as the greatest fighters the world had ever seen though they fought an asymmetric war against the British army yet they held us back for nearly 12 years.

There's a better article here:

The issues been resolved apart from his first term as PM not showing up in a header link.

My guess is the recent riots and controversy by extremist groups on the left and right caused a glitch by triggering anti-terrorism or anti-botnet algorithms but I honestly don't know.

It looks like both of those photo lineups were from Wikipedia articles (i.e., Google grabbed those photos from wiki articles). The first line of pictures came a wiki article on WWII commanders. The second came from a wiki article of British PMs.

That makes me think the issue was with Wikipedia, not Google. And since Wikipedia could be edited by anyone, it could plausibly be that a person vandalized those Wikipedia pages by editing thems to omit Churchhill's image, and it stayed like that until someone else fixed it.

Well, in all the revisionism and misinformation around the British Empire, it was far better than the Empires of other Western nations, and other empires that existed historically.

Regardless of all the ill-judged and poorly conceived negativity, and regardless of the of the Empire (which must be taken in the context of the time), we can take succour in the fact that the British Empire did the following things well:

> Peace - The Empire stopped the endless cycle of wars that had inflicted nations across India and Africa.
> Law - Most places pre-Empire had little concept of law. Human rights were invented by the British and this led to things like the outlawing of Sati in India i.e. ritual sacrifice of the widow at the husband’s funeral.
> Trade - The Empire was about trade. This may have enriched Brits, but it also drove the world economy to improve and created a foreign middle class across the Empire. The East India Company was all about trade. Trade lifted people out of poverty.
> Infrastructure improvements - Rail, roads, shipping routes all served to connect countries and people. These are all used today, as is simple things like town planning, sewerage and fresh water.
> Education - Literacy and education, still in most places today. The English language is still in use and is the language of trade, science and so on.
> Technology - The industrial revolution and the exporting of technology meant that parts of the Empire were able to create their own industry.
> Sport - British sports are global. Football, rugby, tennis, cricket, tiddlywinks et al.
> Slavery - While slavery was endemic across the world at the time of the Empire, the British made the trade illegal across the Empire in 1807 and the Royal Navy worked to kill-off the Atlantic slave trade. While Black Lives Matter have targeted slavery, what they don't mention is the fact that slavery in Africa was a fact of life before the Empire. The Atlantic Slave Trade was blacks selling blacks to whites. Africa had nations based on slavery and stave trade within Africa. In other words, Africans were complicit until the Empire brought that to an end.

It actually took Scotland a little but of time to catch up with the English parliament and for a few short years even while we were actively using our navy to try to stop the slave trade in international waters it remained legal in Scotland even when it was illegal in England and Wales and the rest of the empire (supposedly there were still forced laborers for many years and the Tory's got around the ban on slavery with there workhouses also called poor houses which effectively enslaved the poor - and only ended properly in the early 1970's when the last one was finally closed though it had ceased to be a real workhouse long before that, an idea inherited and imported into England from the Scot's parliament whom invented them in the early 1500's and though I say the Tory's the Liberal's or Wig's were far from innocent in that matter, there are even Tory's today that would dearly love to see the workhouse come back - not to mention that it turned a tidy profit for the owners of these establishment's and there degrading, inhumane, segregation and anti family structure).

That said everything you mention is correct, we have to also add that we only stopped anti slavery patrol's due to budget cut's and the diminishing size of our naval forces as recently as the 1960's but even up to that date they were still intercepting and stopping skiff's full of kidnapped African's on there way to the Yemen and Saudi Arabia thus saving many people each year from a fat which in some cases is worse than death.

We gave the world the ideal of a world policeman which the US took over when the second world war caused the end of our empire due to the costs incurred in fighting the fascists and the term's of the lend lease with the Americans actually pushing for the abolition of empire believing wrongly that it would enhance free trade and so be good for there business model when in fact all it really did was enhance the spread of communism and the soviets often becoming the main exporters to some of those new nation's.

The concept of the British empire as world police arose mainly during the Victorian era when British Christian missionary's and Christian organization pushed to use the empire's resources to help the rest of the world and to introduce them to Christ, many great reformers achieved parliamentary status due to the strength of this Christian resurgence at the heart of the empire and missionary's often ended there lives trying to spread God's teaching's, human right's, education, medical care and British cultural idea's to many impoverished and backward parts of the world and not just the empire.

It is therefore interesting to note how many slanderer's of the British Empire therefore are of Islamic or Hindu Extremist background's.

And in today's secularist (cue anti christian as it is far from secularist in reality) world no one stands up to speak the truth, they would rather hear the one sided anti British bigotry that has taken hold in the world today.

The most interesting thing to note is that they slander in English, eh? Life's a bitch when you can only use the language of the oppressor.
