House speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday rejected a Republican proposal to provide businesses with protection from lawsuits should they choose to reopen during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Especially now, we have every reason to protect our workers and our patients in all of this. We are NOT inclined to be supporting any immunity from liability,” Pelosi told reporters at a press briefing.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and House of Representatives Republican leader Kevin McCarthy issued a joint statement redoubling their demands that, “Americans on the front lines of this fight must receive strong protections from frivolous lawsuits.”
“Senate and House Republicans agree these protections will be absolutely essential to future discussions surrounding recovery legislation,” they said
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday addressed the state's early response to the coronavirus outbreak and said "nobody" should be prosecuted for the those who died, noting that "older people" were most vulnerable. The governor has been criticized for a decision in March, which has since been reversed, to send patients back to nursing homes after they tested positive for COVID-19.
"Despite whatever you do, because with all our progress as a society, we can't keep everyone alive," Cuomo said.
The number of deaths in New York state dropped again Saturday to 139 people.
"How do we get justice for those families of those 139 deaths?" Cuomo said. "Who can we prosecute for those 139 deaths? Nobody. Mother Nature, God, where did this virus come from? People are going to die by this virus, that is the truth."
In the United States we bear witness to a tragical comedy of controlled opposition; two parties representing the same cause vie against each other in violent cultural battles, at the expense of the marginalized and to the profit of those few invisible hands who hoard the abstract figures of monetary games. The United States is a nation of controlled opposition; the Republican Party marches uncontrollably toward a death urge, while the Democratic Party controls the public backlash through weakness, compromise, and incrementation.
More than 4,300 recovering coronavirus patients were sent to New York’s already vulnerable nursing homes under a controversial state directive that was ultimately scrapped amid criticisms it was accelerating the nation’s deadliest outbreaks, according to a count by The Associated Press.
Cuomo, a Democrat, on May 10 reversed the directive, which had been intended to help free up hospital beds for the sickest patients as cases surged. But he continued to defend it this week, saying he didn’t believe it contributed to the more than 5,800 nursing and adult care facility deaths in New York — more than in any other state — and that homes should have spoken up if it was a problem.
