You watch too many movies.

The mutations don't matter unless the virus develops a new spike protein which is rare. Spike proteinsbind to cell receptors in humans and that's how it infects the human body. There's no universal coronaviruses. We're dealing with SARS-CoV-2. We had SARS-CoV in 2003 and MERS-CoV in 2014 which are closely related to SARS-CoV-2.

This allowed researchers to find the protein spike much faster than usual.

So now it's about finding the vaccine that will reduce the effectiveness of the protein spike and lowering it's chances of binding to a cell receptor in humans.

The virus can mutate all it wants. If we reduce the effectiveness of the protein spike then it's harder for the mutations to bind to human cell receptors.

So, the Obama Administration dropped the ball when they cut funding and stopped GOF experiments in these areas because it was cheaper to outsource these experiments.

Of course, Obama can do no wrong so their will always be excuses.

I'm no fan of Obama but the funding cuts were not research cuts were they? They were to provide vaccines if required for those without enough money or insurance?

Or have I missed something?

Germany:

A paper from 2012 warned about the coronavirus while government did nothing:

PDF

Btw, today is vaccination certificate the magic word in Germany. What a "coincidence". I watched the press conference and they really said: If you have such a certificate and are able to provide proof that you are immune, you are allowed to get a bit of your freedom back. First they told us when this and this number is under whatever, then restrictions will be taken back. Next day they come up with another number which has to decline now before curfew can be taken back. Then we are forced to wear mostly useless masks, months too late, to get some of our freedom back. It´s like we are little monkeys and get candy for doing silly tricks.

All that only because they want to hide what they are doing right now (economic crash, blowing money in the backs of big corporations and banks but middleclass has to die, making millions of people unemployed and poor, creating a totalitarian surveillance and working slave state, "health" dictatorship, compulsory vaccination, travel restrictions like ID2020, etc), that they failed and lied to the taxpayers, that they are undermining our freedom and rights. Every other opinion than the one given by the government under Granny Merkel and her henchmen like bankster Spahn, their own virologists (the two which "don´t spread conspiracy theories and panic"...) is "conspiracy theory". These terrorists in the government want to hide that they are the culprits and not that flu like virus that is used as excuse for that system switch to the profits of the ultra-rich and their global acting corporations.

We always should question:
Why is anybody in Sweden still alive, without restrictions and rules like in all the other nations and states which crashed their economy on the basis of obscure numbers and two pictures (truck/coffins in Italy, refrigerated truck NYC) and some interviews from inside of overcrowded intensive care units which where never overcrowded here or even just near to be overcrowded. Many nurses and doctors are even on short-time work right now here, their hopitals are empty because they still have to wait for the "millions of Covid-19 patients". While the numbers of infected are shrinking, same as the infection numbers of the annual flu infections. While we now know that the curfew and wearing masks weren´t the reason for these declining numbers. While we know that they lied to us more than one time in that Event201 story.

But we, the people, have first to catch a fish mid-air and clap with our fins to maybe get some of our freedom back these terrorists stole from us.

Seens federal restrictions were dodged however and research was shifted to a military lab in Wuhan, China.

This isn't about Obama. This is about understanding that we stopped researching gain of function on diseases we had no effective treatment for because we nearly had those bugs escape on us, more than once!

What part of we almost let these bugs out of our own labs around 5 years ago don't you get? That's why this was all stopped.

This is just nonsense.

There was supposed to be a year review and it lasted 3 years. This is about the Obama administration. You had scientist at the time warning about the coronavirus and how we needed this to look for treatments.

These experiments go on throughout the world yet you're going to exclude the United States which has some of the best scientist? You can always make protocols more stringent for safety but to stop it for 3 years is just asinine.

Again, scientist were warning about the coronavirus at the time.

New SARS-like virus can jump directly from bats to humans, no treatment available

Findings provide an opportunity to develop drugs and vaccines for coronaviruses before they emerges from animals to cause a human epidemic

You have a new found virus that can jump from bats to humans and you're going to neuter some of the best scientist in the world for 3 years?

Stop making excuses for Obama.

There's no way GOF studies should have been halted for 3 years when you have scientist warning you in 2015 about a virus that's now sweeping the world. We could have had a vacinne or better treatments right now if we had GOF experiments.

Scientist warned about this at the time.

Scientists for Science

Scientists for Science are confident that biomedical research on potentially dangerous pathogens can be performed safely and is essential for a comprehensive understanding of microbial disease pathogenesis, prevention and treatment. The results of such research are often unanticipated and accrue over time; therefore, risk-benefit analyses are difficult to assess accurately.

If we expect to continue to improve our understanding of how microorganisms cause disease we cannot avoid working with potentially dangerous pathogens. In recognition of this need, significant resources have been invested globally to build and operate BSL-3 and BSL-4 facilities, and to mitigate risk in a variety of ways, involving regulatory requirements, facility engineering and training. Ensuring that these facilities operate safely and are staffed effectively so that risk is minimized is our most important line of defense, as opposed to limiting the types of experiments that are done.

www.scientistsforscience.org...

This is why we're in this situation today. Obama let sloppy China continue these experiments and sidelined some of the brightest minds in this area in the United States. Here's just some of the scientist who signed this.

Scientist warned about the coronavirus in 2015 and said we need vaccines in case of a pandemic. You will not here about this in the media, but the Obama administration cut funding that would have allowed researh into vaccines for the coronavirus in 2015. Here's the paper.

Except the articles you link don't say this was cutting research. It says it's cutting the program that makes vaccines for existing viruses and gives them out because it was going to be covered under ACA.
...this is what you quoted:

President Obama has proposed a $50-million cut to a federal immunization program, citing diminished need for government-funded vaccinations thanks to the Affordable Care Act.

And your linked article in The Atlantic also says it's budget cuts to "give vaccines to people" programs, not to research www.theatlantic.com...

This goes back even further. The paper talks about gain of function experiments. Obama put a pause on these experiments that might have led to a coronavirus vaccine. Trump lifted the moratorium on these experiments in 2017.

Despite these important potential benefits, GOF research (GOFR) can pose risks regarding biosecurity and biosafety. In 2014 the administration of US President Barack Obama called for a “pause” on funding (and relevant research with existing US Government funding) of GOF experiments involving influenza, SARS, and MERS viruses in particular.

And I'm not sure you fully read the paper that you linked --www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov... This quote was at the bottom of the first page:

. Rather than drawing a sharp bright line between GOFR studies that are ethically acceptable and those that are ethically unacceptable, this framework is designed to indicate where any given study would fall on an ethical spectrum—where imaginable cases of GOFR might range from those that are most ethically acceptable (perhaps even ethically praiseworthy or ethically obligatory), at one end of the spectrum, to those that are most ethically problematic or unacceptable (and thus should not be funded, or conducted), at the other. The aim should be that any GOFR pursued (and/or funded) should be as far as possible towards the former end of the spectrum.

In other words, they wanted an ethical review and to eliminate some programs that don't meet certain ethical guidelines. In this case, it was programs that created weaponized viruses -- and that wouldn't have helped us with Covid-19.

The Obama administration cut and in some cases stopped funding to programs that would have given us a vaccine for coronavirus.

First, there's a lot of different coronaviruses and Covid-19 is a new type of coronavirus. Even with full funding from all the previous and current administrations, we still wouldn't have a vaccine for it because it hadn't been found before.

You can see links to programs that DO fund virus research (many of which were cut) at this link

Here's some stories from 2019 about cuts to virus hunting programs (which WOULD have identified Covid-19)

You can look at the history of funding for other viruses (HIV/AIDS) and see that research funding got cut in 2017

Or look at the Obama funding for research n various departments ...and compare the numbers under Trump.

Look, I know the goal here is to defend Obama but it's not working.

Yes, working on things like the coronavirus in GOF experiments for 3 years would have helped us with Covid 19. Scientist at the time, said we need GOF experiments in order to prepare for an outbreak of coronavirus.

New SARS-like virus can jump directly from bats to humans, no treatment available

Findings provide an opportunity to develop drugs and vaccines for coronaviruses before they emerges from animals to cause a human epidemic

The discovery, reported in the Nov. 9 issue of Nature Medicine, is notable not only because there is no treatment for this newly discovered virus, but also because it highlights an ongoing debate over the government's decision to suspend all gain of function experiments on a variety of select agents earlier this year. The move has put a substantial standstill on the development of vaccines or treatments for these pathogens should there be an outbreak.

www.sciencedaily.com...

Again, the Obama administration didn't just stop these GOF experiments for 6 months maybe a year for review. They stopped them for 3 years. This hurt us tremendously.

You will never hear this from the media and Obama apologists.

Listen to the words directly from the mouth of the Obama administration on this:

Because the deliberative process launching today will aim to address key questions about the risks and benefits of gain-of-function studies, during the period of deliberation, the U.S. Government will institute a pause on funding for any new studies that include certain gain-of-function experiments involving influenza, SARS, and MERS viruses. Specifically, the funding pause will apply to gain-of-function research projects that may be reasonably anticipated to confer attributes to influenza, MERS, or SARS viruses such that the virus would have enhanced pathogenicity and/or transmissibility in mammals via the respiratory route.

During this pause, the U.S. Government will not fund any new projects involving these experiments and encourages those currently conducting this type of work – whether federally funded or not – to voluntarily pause their research while risks and benefits are being reassessed. The funding pause will not apply to the characterization or testing of naturally occurring influenza, MERS, and SARS viruses unless there is a reasonable expectation that these tests would increase transmissibility or pathogenicity.

obamawhitehouse.archives.gov...

That "pause" lasted 3 years.

Again, I know Obama can do no wrong so of course pausing GOF experiments didn't hurt us even though scientist warned that we wouldn't be prepared if we stopped these GOF experiments.

Covid 19 is genetically related to bat to human coronaviruses.

Taxonomically, SARS-CoV-2 is a strain of severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SARSr-CoV).[2] It is believed to have zoonotic origins and has close genetic similarity to bat coronaviruses, suggesting it emerged from a bat-borne virus.[

en.wikipedia.org...

Let's go back to 2015 one more time:

New SARS-like virus can jump directly from bats to humans, no treatment available

Findings provide an opportunity to develop drugs and vaccines for coronaviruses before they emerges from animals to cause a human epidemic

www.sciencedaily.com...

This would have been huge in our fight today. From 2015 to 2019 there would have been treatments and vaccines that come from bat to human coronaviruses that's genetically related to the coronavirus today.

If this was a Republican that stopped GOF experiments when scientist were saying we need these experiment to prepare for an outbreak for a coronavirus that can jump from bats to humans 4 years before the outbreak occurs, those scientist would be all over CNN and MSNBC today.

Not THE coronavirus and Not THIS coronavirus.

Coronavirus is a large family of viruses. Covid-19 is a NEW coronavirus that jumped to humans in 2019 and is just one of many.

He was talking about Coronaviruses IN GENERAL - novel forms of which can spring up at any time and against which human biology has no defense against. And we have found out about it to our detriment.

The warnings were NOT ignored by the Obama administration. An office was set up to plan for pandemic outbreaks - an office that Trump closed down almost the day he took office. THAT IS WHY WE ARE IN THE MESS WE ARE IN TODAY.

Vaccination programming under Obama was NOT cut - health care programs were restructured to include the services now included via Obamacare and Medicare expansions. The money was MOVED, not cut off. The Republican push to destroy Obamacare will indeed kill those programs.

It is true that the work on a SARS vaccine was defunded - BY A REPUBLICAN CONGRESS - because the specific threat of SARS was over and in the opinion of the REPUBLICAN CONGRESS, who cares anymore.

If that work had been completed, we would have had a head start on a Covid-19 vaccine, because SARS is also a coronavirus.

Scientist at the time complained about this and I won't list them again because you probably didn't read them the first time. It's clear this is about defending Obama.

If you take the same fact pattern and apply it to a Republican, the scientist that complained then would be all over the news today supporting the narrative that the Republican President is anti-science.

October 17th 2014

Summary: The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and Department of Health and Human Services today announced that the U.S. Government is launching a deliberative process to assess the potential risks and benefits associated with a subset of life sciences research known as “gain-of-function” studies.

obamawhitehouse.archives.gov...

This was a policy pushed for by the Obama administration and scientist complained at the time.

Scientists for Science

Scientists for Science are confident that biomedical research on potentially dangerous pathogens can be performed safely and is essential for a comprehensive understanding of microbial disease pathogenesis, prevention and treatment. Here you have Virologist working on these problems throughout the world but in the United States the best scientist were neutered by the Obama administration from working on these problems.

Again, this is coming from the Obama administration. They pushed this policy on GOF experiments from the Office of Science and Technology and the Office of Health and Human Services. Let me repeat even though I'm sure you will ignore it.

Summary: The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and Department of Health and Human Services today announced that the U.S. Government is launching a deliberative process to assess the potential risks and benefits associated with a subset of life sciences research known as “gain-of-function” studies.

Obama dropped the ball big time and again. If you replace Joe Biden with Mitch McConnell then the Tara Reade story becomes 24 hour breaking news hysteria just like if you replace Obama with a Republican President who stopped these GOF experiments and took the best scientist in the world off of the field in this battle against viruses.

No he wasn't. He was talking about coronaviruses that originate from bats and are genetically similar.

Yes, because bats are the most likely transmission vector from animals to humans. Bats species make up about 20% of all mammal species, do not practice 'social distancing', and are host to many different coronaviruses.

However, bats are not the only species with coronaviruses, and the next one to jump from animal to humans, while statistically likely to be from a bat, could be from anywhere.

A popular science article describing what I just said:
How did coronavirus start? Where did bats get the virus from and how did it spread to humans?

A 2007 article (older that your 2015 article) that describes the Chinese bat species as Coronavirus reservoir hosts and describe the search for CoVs in North American bats.

Detection of Group 1 Coronaviruses in Bats in North America

Hey wait! Who was president in 2007 and why did he ignore the warnings implicit in this article?

OMG! Here's one from 2005! And OMG deja vu! Most of the authors have Asian names!

Identification of a Novel Coronavirus in Bats

Science has known about the potential for CoV based pandemics for years - and have issued such warnings for years - and that's why the gain of function research was happening in the first place, and the CDC, the National Security Council and other health related agencies worked on planning for fighting such pandemics.

Then several accidents occured and scientists called for a re-evaluation of the research protocols to prevent a disaster. Scientists asked for a pause while the protocols were 'hardened', Obama ordered the pause and left office before the 'hardening' was accepted. That acceptance took place after Trump took office. None of that process is 'political', it is all practical, and exactly what should happen "inorder to ... insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,"

And when Trump took office, he killed the international pandemic cooperation office that Obama set up, and threw out the National Security Council work on planning for fighting the pandemic.

Obama Prepared for a Potential Pandemic. Trump Gutted His Work.

Of course a process that started under Obama and completed under Trump can never be described as anything other than a 100% Trump political triumph. That's all part of the "Magic Reset" button you folks have been scrambling for since January of 2009.
