short on substance :

venezuela govt officials claim that a " mercenary atteack " launched from columbia by boat - has been " foiled " today

various sources - have pretty much the same story

8 killed , 2 arrested

my opinion - this seems like a piss poor " mercenary invasion " - several sources show pics of 2 modified 4*4 pickups with light machineguns

wonder how they landed them

and not much else

i suppose more will come in next 24

but i sign off with :
the dogs of war - dont obey quarrantine measures

Well, there has to be something to justify a 'police action'. And you know how a good war or two props up the popularity of the Presidency.

Isn't it interesting that the US President has signed an executive order to assign the military to fighting the drug cartels? Why not beef up the DEA or the other existing anti-narcotics forces?

its really off topic for this thread , but:

no - not really

its my opinion that the military assets will be :

C3I and surveilence assets - that come with a lot of very expensive shiney kit - that the DEA budget will not accomodate

plus - exercises in a " soft " campaign - get the military trained for real war

and further - military on termporary secondment can be sent back to thier unit - on a whim

once you have expanded a statutory agency - like DEA - its a lot harder to shrink it again

the military gets paid what ever it does - its only consumables used - that increase cost

there - that cover it ?

MIAMI (AP) — The plan was simple, but perilous. Some 300 heavily armed volunteers would sneak into Venezuela from the northern tip of South America. Along the way, they would raid military bases in the socialist country and ignite a popular rebellion that would end in President Nicolás Maduro’s arrest.

What could go wrong? As it turns out, pretty much everything.

The ringleader of the plot is now jailed in the U.S. on narcotics charges. Authorities in the U.S. and Colombia are asking questions about the role of his muscular American adviser, a former Green Beret. And dozens of desperate combatants who flocked to secret training camps in Colombia said they have been left to fend for themselves amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Sounds well thought out.

Hay I agree with you mostly here but I think it’s an issue of firepower and technology, they want to use the military’s might and tech but they don’t want it shared with other agency’s. Keeping it compartmentalized.

As you already stated making some warbucks is almost definitely a priority aswell.

There ya go...I said in the other thread about this planned operation...why in the hell did they announce this planned operation???

"Venezuelan president, we don't like you, so we'll be sending people in to oust you. Get ready."

Well I guess they were ready.
