Trump keeps referring to the flu of 1917. The Spanish flu occurred in 1918-19. Why does he keep getting this wrong day after day? Don't his advisors tell him the correct dates? Is he doing it in some attempt to get people to google the wrong thing and thus assume it was a nothing burger? Or is he really going senile? Such a repeated error is more than just an inadvertent slip. So what gives?

This movie is about the soldiers that fought against the Spanish. Viruses.

Pehaps it's the mental associations with the First World War (which overlapped). From the American viewpoint, isn't that war "the war of 1917"?

Perhaps his flunkies are too afraid to correct him?

And he is just as human as the next guy. Probably a little bit slower in the thinkin' department, though.

Or, perhaps it is fake history?

Because the Spanish Flu actually FIRST occured in Northern China (Shanxi Province) in 1917.

The China-origin theory received a huge boost in 2014 when a Canadian historian found that China experienced an outbreak of a pneumonia in 1917 that was similar to the Spanish Flu.

During the outbreak, Allied forces were recruiting Chinese laborers to help with the war effort in Europe. The theory goes that these 94,000 laborers, many of whom were supposedly infected, were transported across Canada via rail and finally to Europe, ensuring the global spread of the pandemic. At the time, this revelation was seen as “about as close to a smoking gun as a historian is going to get” showing that the influenza virus came from China.

I thought this was a thread about blaming Trump for the Spanish Flu.

I know Trump was responsible for the sinking of the Lusitania and for the stock market crash of '29. (That's 1929 for those who don't understand).

The bastard!

According to an estimate by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were approximately 45 million cases of the flu in the United States during the 2017-2018 influenza season, resulting in an estimated 810,000 flu-associated hospitalizations and an estimated 61,000 flu-associated deaths.

Why does he keep getting this wrong day after day?

Because he’s a moron surrounded by flunkies who would lose their job if they corrected him on anything.

We aren’t talking about the cream of the crop here.

When I heard him mention it during the Covid task force the other day, he said "There hasn't been an attack like this since 1917".. the first thinig that came to my mind was the Communist take over of Russia in 1917, the Bolshevik revolution.

He seems to use double speak quite a lot.

1917 is Odd. all odd integers. Trump is a little odd so what is the issue.

Actually the earliest cases may have been in England in late 1917 There was even an earlier outbreak somewhere in 1916 which may have also been the same flue. So, Trump might have lucked out with this one.

Because it honestly doesn’t matter what Trump says. No matter what, it will be twisted and used against him. So flubbing a date over a hundred years ago isn’t a big deal...not when you compare it to say...eating two scoops of ice cream.

Just remember, the US government made drinking alcohol illegal and letting women vote become legal 100 years ago and we survived. But no one says jack about Switzerland putting off Women’s Rights until 1971...

I guess they were lucky not to have any deranged Liberals back in 1917.

You are cherry picking, no guess as to why.
Nobody really knows the origins of the 1918-20 pandemic, while British troops had severe outbreaks in France 1916, Aldershot, England, troop camps in 1917, both cases had poor conditions and hygiene involved.

You can even argue that those poor conditions, along with livestock had a severe virus mutate into the pandemic that was 1918-20....that, it seems, is where scientist in the field speculate on

China's role in that is debatable, they had a reported mild Flu' in 1918.
So, what all of us has to deal is theories, most of them modern and in retrospect.

Ironically, many people in the virology field, also see COVID-19 virus/SARS-CoV-2 as probably being impossible to find the exact origin of the virus.

So, watch this space, rather than dick on what is still a theory.

Maybe he is just a little more informed than you...

According to Oxford, a similar outbreak occurred in March 1917 at army barracks in Aldershot,[23] and military pathologists later recognized these early outbreaks as the same disease as the 1918 flu.

Trump keeps referring to the flu of 1917.

Maybe because it actually started spreading in 1917 even though "the official" version says January 1918,
Probably to cover-up the possibility of it being a chemical weapon (circa WW1) 😃

Why would you say that, do you hear Trump talking about a first wave, a very deadly second wave, and a lesser third wave, about this virus?
FFS, we are only at the first wave and Trump wants to put people back to work yesterday...he has no clue, his 'experts' are telling him nothing at best, or if they are, he's ignoring them.
