In yesterdays coronavirus briefing Trump insisted that he and the federal government have all the power;

"The federal government has absolute power. As to whether I'll use that power, we'll see."

Trump falsely claims that 'when somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total'

Between this and his desire to be 'president-for-life' I'm pretty happy that more people are buying guns. The government's power must be kept in-check, either through the branches of government or by the states. He is not a king.

A government by the people... for the people?...

Do that ring any sort of bells to any politicians any longer?

I'm super curious to see what manner of mental gymnastics Trump supporters, who claim to be "Patriots" and honor the Constitution, will provide to justify Trump essentially trying to be a dictator or King. If the past 4 years has shown anything, it's that his base will literally twist reality to justify this nonsense.

Agreed. Though, we have the same issue in Canada. This State of Emergency has essentially become a power-grabbing opportunity to bypass what were supposed to be rights and freedoms. And now they simply need to extend the duration of the emergency, and there you go! How to build a totalitarian state for dummies.

Ummm...NATIONAL SECURITY...

And virtually everything under the sun can be included by the shade thrown by that particular umbrella...

So...yeah...pretty much...

You peeps are too easy to figure out...it’s like you all have easy buttons on your foreheads...

He made it clear that the president of the United states has certain powers, and at this time he presides in that seat. A reporter is just a reporter, the president of the united states does not have to bow down to every reporter. He is the first president who is taking all the crap from reporters trying to set him up to say things to twist in the news. Obama would never have taken that Crap, neither would any other president of the USA. I feel sorry for the next Democrat president, they will have to deal with changes in how trump let reporters hijack what he said, The president of the US will never again be able to do anything that the other party feels is inappropriate. This will tear apart our country, Trump should have squashed these kind of reporters, he is going to make it hard for all future presidents and congressmen to get anything accomplished by being too considerate of others rights. We can blame Trump for destroying our government's ability to function correctly from this point on to when it is replaced. A little disruptive peon with a press badge can now destroy our government.

I agree that statement is him getting a little bit big for his britches....
Checks and balances prevents any president from over stepping their authority...thank you founding fathers.

I also wonder about governor's issuing citations for shelter in place violations.
Do they actually have the authority?
Can they enforce this on people gathering at church which is protected by the first amendment.

The Federal Government does have total power. Or is it Utah? Maybe it's Alabama's Supreme Court.

Supremacy clause gives the executive branch the power of enforcing laws. The judicial branch reviews laws that are being enforced . And the constitution is the final say in both .

The First amendment right to assembly is being violated in many states .

Article 2 of the US Constitution gives the executive branch the power to enforce all laws i.e. the constitution .

Trump is the chief executive .

I don’t even know why there’s a discussion going on about this .

"National security" would have been a good reason for Trump to have locked down the country and/or declared martial law.

"National security" is not going to give the president ultimate authority to force businesses to open, people to patronize them or force parents to send their children to school, if local and state officials are being advised the opposite by medical professionals.

Did FDR do some crazy power grabs?

Why don't you look at all the things he did with his Presidential Authority, then get back to me.

Trump's actions pale in comparison.

What law can Trump enforce that forces private businesses to reopen?

I believe the President of the United States of America is sole member of the Executive Branch of government.
And Trump uses that power to infuriate liberals.
Didn't liberals have any civics classes at all ?

Ummm...the speed at which all these governments implemented their...shut the damn country and economy down...

Speaks to me of a plan...

I’ve said it before...and I’ll repeat it here...

Covid-19 was used as cover for the planned destruction of this world order...enter the death of democracy and republic...so that birth of a new order...as peeps fawn over the new socialism...

So...I have questions on wether Covid-19 was used as the mechanism to initiate the plan...

Obvious opinion on my part...but sometimes connecting dots actually illustrates reality...

And then you have people who will not obey recommendations like the Governor of South Dakota with the most new cases in the country. Way to go...! Not.
So what freedoms have you been denied ?

"Between this and his desire to be 'president-for-life' I'm pretty happy that more people are buying guns. The government's power must be kept in-check, either through the branches of government or buy the states. He is not a king" = opinion

Canada don't count....

some of you just don't get the 'stay home' concept to fight what could be an out of control deadly catastrophic virus. Your petty reasons and stubbornness are all that matters. What does matter, is extraordinary times take extraordinary measures.
It's pointless to even have conversation with such embedded 'spin' and prejudices as a mindset.

This will pass and we will be back to normal with Pelosi and dems being inflexible and insane, like it was for you libs, back 'in the good old days'

And yea, President Trump will get re-elected in a landslide despite your hyperbolic protest.

First amendment .

If the governor’s aren’t allowing you to go to work.

That falls under the right to assembly .

The First amendment pretty much covers everything that’s why I picked it .

Nah your taking it out of context...

Trump was referring to fake news.... about this tweet: twitter.com... F%2Fwww.bloomberg.com%2Fnews%2Farticles%2F2020-04-13%2Ftrump-declares-he-has-power-to-open-up-states-not-governors

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
·

For the purpose of creating conflict and confusion, some in the Fake News Media are saying that it is the Governors decision to open up the states, not that of the President of the United States & the Federal Government. Let it be fully understood that this is incorrect....

A governor can't announce all states are open LOL..... you guys just don't get it lol.... that is the president job.

Trump didn’t say that he would order governors to remove limits against their wishes, but when asked what would happen if they refused to comply, Trump said that “if some states refuse to open, I would like to see that person run for election.”

So, you're saying that local and state governments are currently violating the Constitution and Trump is allowing it? But, he might decide to NOT allow it, later?

I said...NATIONAL SECURITY...

Think about it...

Everything you mentioned still falls under that umbrella’s shade...everything...
