Not to be that guy, but I think 2112 is about a dystopian future where music is suppressed. A young man finds a guitar in a cave and, not knowing what it is, takes it to his elders who tell him it's not allowed in their society. Then he goes on to martyr himself to share the music he creates with it...or something like that

Attention all planets of the solar federation
Attention all planets of the solar federation

We have assumed control
We have assumed control

Hed(pe)
IFO

Somewhere, somehow, somewhen
We'll see it happen again, my friend
A simple visitation gone wrong like back in '47
Only this time we'll be on the scene like Kent Brockman
Or Sam Donaldson live in New Mexico
But now you can't fool us
Now you can't lie or deny so much
It's obvious why none of us trust you
How does a flying disc turn into a weather balloon
How long did you think you could trick us with lies?
Can't put a cover on the skies
Can't hide that face or those big black eyes
So how you gonna put a cover up on the skies?
Realize, I'm not surprised at your deception
Correction, I welcome the challenge to intercept it
The message loud & clear
You think we fear it
Reverse it
Me & mine we will embrace it
So face it
I got the 411
I got the CNN
We on-line
TV & me we kin
My click is the mandelbrot set
My crops lie unbroken
Your hoaxes, a feeble attempt
Circle perfect, bring the revelation
Your realization far too many videotapes to go around erasin'
This ain't no J.F.K.
Check the I.F.O.-out the box
Fresh like sightings on FOX
Documenting the coming of the chariots
Gods in the making, no more jiving
No more fakin' the real
How long did you think you could trick us with lies
Tricks are for punks
Can't hide the face or those deep black eyes
How you gonna put a cover-up on the skies?
Take me to your leader
He don't even know you
We the niggaz of earth
Got to show you
The peckerwoods can't stand the site of the Africans
What are they gonna do when they face off with a gray man
Prepare to meet your maker in the skies over the pyramids
Check stonehenge
Go ask the Mayans
2012 soon come
I will be waitin' sayin' I told you so
When the skies are ripped open
And the mothership lands on your cynical ass
Maybe then you will believe & concede
That you can't hide the sun
Can't hide the moon
Can't keep some secrets so big
Yes, the truth must transcend
And when it does, my friend I will be chillin' by the TV
Rockin' with CNN
Yeah, my bong in hand
Surrounded by friends
When the world as we know it will end

wiki cuase it's fast,

"2112" tells a story set in the city of Megadon in the year 2112,[19] "where individualism and creativity are outlawed with the population controlled by a cabal of malevolent Priests who reside in the Temples of Syrinx".[10] A galaxy-wide war resulted in the planets forcefully joining the Solar Federation (symbolized by the "Red Star"). By 2112, the world is controlled by the priests who take orders from giant banks of computers inside the temple.[19] Music is unknown in this world absent of creativity and individuality, but in "Discovery", a nameless man finds a beaten guitar inside a cave and rediscovers the lost art of music.[13][19][13] In "Presentation", the man takes the guitar to the priests at the temple, who say, "Yes, we know, it's nothing new; it's just a waste of time", and then proceed angrily to destroy it and banish him. Next, in "Oracle: The Dream", the man dreams of a new planet, established at the same time as the Solar Federation, where creative people live.[13] He awakens, depressed that music is part of such a civilization and that he can never be part of it, and kills himself, in "Soliloquy", originally titled "Soliloquy of the Soul".[10] Another planetary war begins in "Grand Finale",[18] originally named "Denouement",[10] resulting in the ambiguous spoken ending: "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation: We have assumed control". Peart described the ending as a "double surprise ... a real Hitchcock killer".[19]
2112 (album)

I got the whole solar federation part but didn't realize the priests were necessarily from a different planet than the guy who finds the guitar.

2112 was about humans who have populated the "solar federation" and the priests were just greedy humans who had control, not unlike today. It says it right there, a "nameless man" finds the guitar.

So, yeah, technically on a foreign planet we are the aliens but come on, it's just us out there in this fable. Alien Shore is about relationships. Look at the first line, "You and I, we are strangers by one chromosome". Most of Counterparts is about relationships.

i think that the priests are from what ever planet the man is in this case say earth. they get their dogma from the computers.

if you notice in the dream he sees the the elder race ( they left our planet long ago), i take it as, when they left and colonized other planets some decided to form a new lets say religion and started the 1st galactic war.

they maybe human, but there from another planet. so if going by the strict definition of the word they are alien to earth.

sorta like The Expanse, the people on Mars are Martins/ Dusters, the people in asteroid belt space stations Skinnies/Belters
and people from earth earthers.

the second song, many think that aliens came to earth and used their DNA/Genes to make us. so in the verses

You and I, we are strangers by one chromosome

and then

You and I, we must dive below the surface
A world of red neon and ultramarine
Shining bridges on the ocean floor
Reaching to the alien shore

could be seen as genetic modification influencing evolution like in seen in Prometheus

I agree to disagree with all you have said. You are reading way too much into it.

Can you translate for those of us who are musically illiterate? Or is this one of those things that will lose meaning in translation?
I love this song but always thought the video was disturbingly bizarre.
