“I Heart Huckabees” is a great one from 2004. Highly recommended if you haven’t seen it.

“Waking Life” from 2001 will knock your socks off!

“My Dinner with Audrey” is probably my all time favorite. If you have not seen that movie, please please please go watch it on YouTube right now.

“ Synecdoche New York” is a really interesting Film too. So much symbolism it hurts!

Anybody ever see ”Gumo?” Not sure if it’s Esoteric enough but it will blow a hole in your brain for sure lol.

Metropolis (1927)
Eraserhead (1977)
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

And everything by Maya Deren.

Metropolis, sure
Eyes Wide Shut, sure

But Eraserhead ? I saw that when it first came out cuz it was said to be so deep. My friends who saw it with me called it deep but could not offer what it said that was so deep. So I went to see it again. Still nothing. So decades later I watched it again figuring now that I'm older and maybe wiser, and more experienced in stuff, I would find something in it. But nope.

That's a shame you didn't get anything out of it.
I wouldn't call it esoteric.

With that film I think Lynch wonderfully creates a nightmarescape brought on by the anxiety and fear of parenthood.

Not sure if this fits the bill but there a Harry Kumel film called Malpertuis which is one of my all time favourites.

No spoilers but it is not very much like the novel by Jean Ray on which it is based. It's described as a haunted house story but that in no way fits the actual events in the book or the film.

It may be tricky getting hold of a copy and, if I were you, avoid looking it up because all the reviews and info online will absolutely ruin the mystery of seeing it for yourself with no clues.

There were problems with filming and there are at least two versions (edits) out there. Orson Welles is in it and gives a great performance. It also has Susan Hampshire and Matthieu Carriere.

I have never met anyone who has seen it and saw it on TV one night and thought I must have dreamt it! Took me years to find a French copy on DVD then, eventually payed far too much for a fancy two disc edition with all the extras in English.

Hope this is of interest.
