I've only seen the Gregory Peck version, but it and the book are pretty awesome, although it's been about 20+ years.

I was thinking of revisiting them.

Being in the UK and seeing things spread west across Europe it felt very apt. Either version.

I loved the TV version from 2000. Really good and a job well done by everyone in it. It's long but highy recommended.
