The u.s. relies on China too much...

Made in America ...its that hard?

Can you pay 15$ an hour to every worker? Earning an actual living and taking care of others requires at least that much minimum.

Will Americans pay the higher prices?

But if everything is suddenly more expensive, 15$ hr may not be enough. Make it 25$ hr.

But that'll make everything even more expensive, so 25$ hr suddenly won't be enough. We'll need 35$ an hr...

It becomes an inflationary cycle.

Maybe it's best to keep China employed for the time being till we can work out real solutions to our economic conundrum?

A solution to Capitalism? Well, some folks have tried Communism, but that's a bucolic fantasy that never really worked. That pretty much leaves us with either Fascism or some kind of Monarchy / Empire. Fascism has proven to really boost an economy, unfortunately with a heavy cost to minorities. So I guess Monarchy it is! People love royalty and stuff, probably from hearing all the children's stories. A lot of Americans love the notion of legacies, which is why we'll likely see Jeb Bush as President someday. Or Chelsea Clinton.

But we don't really operate on pure Capitalism anyway, right? We're a quasi-Socialist economy based on a massive military and entrenched bureaucracy. That would be a pretty nasty string of Christmas tree lights to untangle.

It will take decades, maybe half a century to fix the mess our parents created.

We need new ideas, the old ones aren't working.

I have wondered why we haven't outlawed anything ingestible from China since it was proven they were making dog food with cement and plastic in it. The FDA tests less than 2% of imported food.
India has been proven to have quality issues in the drugs they manufacture too. With ingredients coming from China, that's understandable.
Drugs should be manufactured in the US, with strict quality control over all of the ingredients used, IMO. And there should be sever penalties for any company caught subverting quality; mandatory jail time in addition to monetary fines. Lives depend on it.

Remember when Obama's USDA gave the green light to send poultry to China to be processed, and shipped back?

We have India, Mexico, Israel... Maybe China will sign their commerce death warrant

India gets almost all of its materials for the drugs they make and send to the US from China as well, it stands to reason they would target India with that embargo as well

If China does this then we would boycott everything Chinese made. Do you know what happens when we do that? Bye bye China. China's economy would completely collapse. We could also probably talk our allies into not buying their crap either in the name of sanctions.

China would quickly become a shadow of its former self.

Wow. So I'm guessing we would all just boycott minerals, smartphones, TV's, computers, video games, kitchen appliances, brand name clothing, brand name shoes, wheels for our cars, strollers, etc etc etc.

Makes sense to me!

Let's get one thing straight. China currently has the upper hand, and you're completely naive if you believe otherwise. That is why starting a trade war with them is utterly foolish.

China is steps away from being completely self sufficient.

The US is completely reliant on China.

Our drugs, that we rely on to fight cancer, infections, viral infection, anti rejection, anti-depressant, are THEIR product, and they have every right not to sell to us.

Not only that, we can practically guarantee that they WILL stop selling to us if we keep trying to wrench their economy.

And the only ones to blame are the brilliant right wing Lazzais Faire, who have happily outsourced all of our jobs to purchase their fourth yacht. And all the repubs and right wing nut jobs who shot themselves in the foot supporting them.

I have been saying this for years, when it comes to China... you can't trust them! Never did meet a commie you could trust

they steal our IP, attack our computer infrastructure, undermine our foreign policy and continually export either cheap junk or pathogens.

I'd be worried about the next big bug to come out of there or anywhere else for that matter. It is clear we all should be more prepared to face a pandemic, which appear to be happening more frequently.

China doesn't look like they have the upper hand to me. Besides, the minute it appears they could challenge our global primacy is the minute we will (hopefully, with a rational leader) wipe them off the map.

Ever hear of the strategic national stockpile? Moving manufacturing capacity back to the US has been in works for 3 years now. and beyond that, we have "capabilities" to really put the hurt on them should we choose. Frankly I'm disappointed we haven't made a move yet given their current inability to sustain any sort of war.

I strongly suspect this is a bio-weapon that came out of Wuhan's BL-4 lab. All the pieces fit too perfectly for it to be random.

India has already decided not to send medical products for exports.

New Delhi, Feb 24: In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, India has imposed restrictions on export of certain medical equipment to China on Sunday. It is done in view of their short supply within the country and asserted that precautions taken by authorities were in accordance with the World Health Organisation (WHO)'s advisory on coronavirus.

On Sunday, the comments by the Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs came after China raised the issue of India restricting export of certain medical supplies to it following the coronavirus epidemic in that country.

Coronavirus: India imposes restrictions on export of medical equipment to China

Whether we like it or not the U.S. relies too much on medical exports from other countries, and something like this was bound to happen.

I'm glad you're experiencing a swelling of national pride (and I agree with you, the US is FARAWAY the most ingenuitive country that's ever existed)

BUT, your comment reflects the utter cluelessness of most modern Americans.

China needs us for Soybeans and entertainment. On the other hand, our entire economy depends on them. How do we possibly have any sort of upper hand? LOL. That's NONSENSE.

1. China owns 1.5 trillion in US treasury securities, and our trade deficit is 500 billion.

2. A simple stimulus to the Chinese middle class could increase their domestic demand to the point where they had zero reliance on US exports.

3. Our middle class is completely without purchasing power. Because of our reliance on cheap Chinese labor. WE rely on THEM.

Here's the rough translation: If the Chinese wanted to stop selling us our medication, they would survive just fine if we then cut them off from trade, with appropriate government stimulus, their economy would rebound.

Meanwhile, we would see a major resurgence of diseases such as HIV, Cancer, and other infectious diseases. In the effort to shift drug manufacturing domestically, we would see the price of generic medications at least quintuple, as we would no longer be benefitting from China's $2/hr workforce.

Not to mention the cost of new infrastructureto get there. Only the super rich would be able to afford regular monthly refills.

And the same goes for EVERY SING OTHER INDUSTRY, besides the entertainment industry, and corn and soybean. We produce NOTHING, besides easily copied Intellectual property.

That's simply not what creates inflation.

Inflation is caused by increase in the total money supply. Economics 101.

Total money supply is ultimately grown through bank loans/bank interest.

A $25 minimum wage, for instance, while it would effectively strangle certain small business owners, would not create measurable inflation, but would effectively create a more even distribution of the money supply.

Wrong.

China depends on us to buy all their crap. We are their number one buyer of their crap. Also, once they piss us off we get our allies (you know the other richest countries in the world) to stop buying their crap too, in the name of sanctions.

Guess what happens when most countries stop buying their crap? THEY CRUMBLE. Its pretty simple.

I hope China DOES ban exporting drugs. The US can begin drug production again, and import from Canada and India until we are up to speed. This is a BIG wake up call. Its time to STOP letting China produce ANYTHING for us that is a threat to our national security. And the people who have been facilitating this need to be prosecuted.

Why do people like you always have to mention war? Why does this even have to involve war, or talk about war!?

One thing thst bothers me, and annoys me, is that fact that many people loom at other countries as a selective, and not a country filled with millions of individual msn, women and children. I guess if you look at them as one, then it's easier for people like you to talk about war when there is no need to even mention it.

But that is the reason why we have many wars and conflicts, and people do not really think about the deaths because they see said country as one, and not a country full of individuals.

So don't mention war please!

Some people want war, some enjoy seeing others suffer, some are sold the lie war is glorious.

There are many reasons, another is that humans are inherently violent and bloodthirsty.

We people are our own worst enemies.

Also, normally these people will never be involved in said war, but they lime the thought of it, lime it's the videogame call of duty or something.

We human beings have a long way to go! Still so primitive!

We don't owe China a trillion dollars any more. They made the world sick and die. They owe all of us. Think of all the people who died, those who were sick and scared, the families who are suffering, the panic and fear they have caused, lost productivity due to reading the situation on the internet news, lost economy and sales due to fear of the consumers. No, I would say the slate is clean or they owe all of us for damages due to the difficulties and supplies people had to use up and purchase for this pandemic. China owes the world. They need to stop being abusers, rude, immoral, unkind. They are just a bad human evil neighbor.
