I am afriad i'll look ignorant asking this... but where does your avatar show up? Does it appear on your background picture? If so can you choose where to place it?

The voting thing on members' profiles is for the Way Above Top Secret award, sometimes referred to as the WATS or TWATS. More info about it here:

Above it you will also see the "ignore" option which allows you to ignore specific members. Pressing this button on a member's profile means you will no longer see that member's posts. This can be deactivated later if you so wish. Use with caution.
