The punk movement spawned an explosion of creativity in all types of music - I was a huge fan of these guys before they went pop. I'm glad they made a good living but their early stuff meant the most to me.

Here's one of their last pre-popstar releases. You can hear them moving towards dance music.

I went to a show New Year's Eve 1979 at the Long Beach Arena with Devo headlining and X and some other band called "DOVE The Band of Love" opening. DOVE came out first and about three songs in most people realized it was DEVO in disguise. They were doing mostly crappy/cheesy muzak versions of their own songs but did do a previously unheard tune, "Gates of Steel" which got a huge response. So much so that they played it a 2nd time for an encore. The story I heard later was that X got pissed off that Devo basically opened for themselves (subsequently getting paid twice) so they ate all of the craft services food backstage leaving none for the spud boys. Here's some footage I found of DOVE - it's crappy but still a fun memory for me anyway.

Here's another band that ran afoul of Big Biz - When Virgin Records found out that little-known Manchester punk/pop band The Freshies had used their name in a song they promptly sued, forcing the band to re-record their tune and remove the offense. This is especially amusing since another part of the song is literally a running list of practically every record label you could think of.

Here it is, before and after :
