I haven't seen this talked about before and no search for 'maned lioness' so thought i'd post it.

Its from a few years ago now and I believe the study is still ongoing.

This lion king (pictured above) is a queen. And she’s not the only one.

Five lionesses in Botswana have grown a mane and are showing male-like behaviours. One is even roaring and mounting other females.

Male lions are distinguished by their mane, which they use to attract females, and they roar to protect their territory or call upon members of their pride. Females lack a mane and are not as vocal.

But sometimes lionesses grow a mane and even behave a bit like males. However, until now, reports of such maned lionesses have been extremely rare and largely anecdotal. We knew they existed, but little about how they behave.

Nature is nothing if not fascinating in it's diversity.

I see they believe genetics are involved.
I wonder what the male population is like in their area. A shortage? Bad genes? Do they all have the same father? Or relatives?

Very interesting.

They should immediately put down to prevent the genes from passing on. Plus, gay frogs I think.

By the face, you can see it is a female....the mane is crazy on it. Kind of cute actually.

I wonder what the other lionesses think of this transgender female, they seem to be a Catservative bunch of animals.

I'd look to see the size of the native lion population in the Okavango delta to see, but I suspect inbreeding may be your culprit.

I think that while lions are numerous, their populations are also highly fragmented in some places making for isolated gene pools.

That is 100% a female lion as you can observe by the colorful jewelry sticking out of its neck.
