By the end of the year, the death toll from the Wuhan Virus will have peaked at 600 or so, China will have announced that it has "got the virus under control", other countries will relax, the WHO will grin and say "calm down" and you will all be wondering what all of this fuss was really all about!

There appears to be some hysteria here (considering, the HIV/AIDs pandemic killed over 75 million people with an annual death rate of a million), but it all appears to be a little over the top, don't you think?

Bold prediction... But it sounds like something China would say.

"We have under control. No need worry, enjoy life, wash hands, trust CCP".

I personally don't trust the numbers they're reporting... But yes, often times these things are blown out of proportion. This one does seem to have the potential to be devistating by the rate it's going though.

Tell that to China.
Does locking down over 17 major Chinese cities seem "a little over the top" to you?

BTW...Welcome to ATS, new person.

Yes.

And my post wasn't just directed at you, it was also directed at the Chinese.

The news about the lockdowns does seem over the top, yes.

But the numbers being reported just don't warrant such a response.

Again, I ask - was there also talk about lockdowns, quarantines and closed borders during HIV/AIDs

(Thanks for the welcome.)

No, because aids required blood to blood contact... It wasn't airborne.

Most people have little to fear about the virus (hopefully).

You should be terrified by the various State action taking place. The consequences will be enormous.

Prepare for that.

Agreed. But SARS and MERS had the potential to be globally devastating, but clearly they weren't.

In reality, such viruses are only hugely threatening if you have existing underlying health conditions, are a woman or are elderly and/or have a weakened immune system for whatever reason...

Over the top? Hmmmm.... I'd say opinions will vary based upon the direct impact of the virus on one's life. Let's ask some of the dead. Oh dear. We can't.

On the other hand, I won't be trying to avoid this flu any more or less than any other flu. Reasonable precautions for reasonable risks, of course, but appropriate precautions include having the resources to nurse and nurture one's own health in the event that one does get sick. The absolute last place I would want to seek help is at a hospital or doctor's office! In the final analysis, most people will recover just fine, and then be immune to it for life.

But I'm of the belief that none of us will die one nanosecond before it's our time. And there's nothing we can do about that. Better to focus on quality of life than quantity. If I'm wrong, well, I still come out ahead!

Exactly.

And that's why I said hopefully. Ask yourself why Xi's government would invite this unprecedented level of economic disruption?

Very bold prediction considering were already over 6,000 confirmed cases and 132 deaths. We'll be really lucky if china only has 500 more deaths this year, but that's a long shot. And how exactly can you compare HIV/AIDS with coronavirus? HIV/AIDS transmission is through blood, and the coronavirus is airborne. This is the dumbest comparison I've seen made yet. Give it another month before you start making your "informed" opinion.

SARS and MERS didn't appear to have as effective transmission as this new coronavirus.

Truth be told, there hasn't been a lot of time for experts to research the new virus... But if we go off of numbers alone, it's cause for concern.

56 million are quarantined. Two temperary hospitals are nearing completion with more in the works.

By all means, if you don't think it's a big deal, more power to you. But you haven't provided any compelling evidence or argument to say this is a trivial outbreak. As it stands I think what we have to go off of says otherwise. Hindsight will be 20/20.

You're being tongue-in-cheek here, right?
You just mentioned what must be around 70 percent of the world population.

Good day sir or madam,

I would say that the threat of this virus should not be understated, after all when oppenheimer thought that the first nuclear bomb, he didn't know if it would ignite the atmosphere, but he developed the nuke anyway.

This is getting nasty quickly-the incubation period is fifteen days, you could have it yourself and not know it, that's why the quarantine is necessary.

Yep, my kids seemed freaked out by this virus yesterday after picking them up from school. I had to tell them that the majority of the people dying from this virus are people with weak immune systems...the very young and elderly.

I also had to let them know the news likes to blow things out of proportion for ratings. I hate all the fear-mongering over this and reminds me of a few years ago when H1N1 was what they told you to fear.

Margaret Chan announces that the H1N1 outbreak has moved into the post-pandemic period. June 26, 2012 - A study published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal estimates that the global death toll from the pandemic ranges between 151,700 and 575,400.

So if we go with 500,000 deaths, that means .006% of the population died from H1N1. A far cry from how serious the news wanted you to believe.

It's completely overblown for such a mild virus.

But these people believe anything the tv says so what do you expect?

Not to be harsh or downplay deaths, but even if I had it, I'd be fine because I'm not: a woman, an individual with an underlying health condition, elderly or have a compromised immune system for whatever reason.

You keep confusing me with the woman aspect of immune systems.

To my knowledge there isn't a glaring difference in men vs women immunity. If I had to take a guess though, women probably have a stronger one.

BTW, all of our immune systems come from our mothers (assuming you had natural milk and not formula).
