The explanation is that coronavirus refers to a family of viruses and that this is a new strain...



What is a coronavirus?

A coronavirus is a type of common virus that can infect your nose, sinuses, or upper throat.

They can spread much like cold viruses.

Almost everyone gets a coronavirus infection at least once in their life, most likely as a young child. Most coronaviruses are not dangerous, but some are.

Those that cause Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) or severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) can be deadly.

So I guess its a good thing that the CDC patented it...?

USA Today got their panties in a bunch when someone online claimed that this is a virus created in a lab, was intentionally released and that theres a vaccine all ready to go.

Numerous posts claim the virus has been patented — and some even suggest, incorrectly, that the virus was made in a lab and a vaccine already exists.

Yet another proposes a similar conspiracy. “So.. patent on this ‘new’ Corona virus expired on the 22nd, today,” the post says. “We have a sudden outbreak. There’s magically already a vaccine available.”

Well there you have it folks. This was not created in a lab and not part of a plan to push vaccines, derail the anti-vaxx movement or even part of a bigger plan to reduce the world's population.

Where would you get that crazy idea?

The Pirbright Institute have issued a statement on the 24th January stating that:-

The Pirbright Institute carries out research on infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), a coronavirus that infects poultry, and porcine deltacoronavirus that infects pigs. Pirbright does not currently work with human coronaviruses. More information on our coronavirus livestock research can be found on our website.

and also address the rumours regarding Bill & Melinda Gates

The Institute is strategically funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, part of UK Research and Innovation (BBSRC UKRI) and also receives funding from many other organisations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The patented work was not funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

They state that "it is far too early for any vaccine to have been developed against the new coronavirus....there are currently no licensed coronavirus antivirals"

Yeah, there's a lot of confusion - people don't realize that a coronavirus is a type of virus, its not THIS coronavirus.

Yes, other coronaviruses had been genome sequenced and that data is then patented. It doesn't mean they invented the virus, they simply isolated and mapped it, or its components, proteins, etc. Doing so is one of the first steps toward developing antivirals and vaccines.

That said, the USA Today piece reads like a typical conspiracy-squashig piece. Take the information that is easily proven, or known to be false (i.e. that those patents are for this strain of the virus, or that a vaccine is ready to go, etc.) - mix it in with the very real possibility that it got out of the Level 4 Wuhan Biotech lab (whether by accident or on purpose), and summarily dismiss the whole thing.
