As far as pandemics influencing people's minds about immigration and it's particulars, this pandemic started with regular business travel and so relating it to this topic is moot ... at best.

Are we ready for utopian ideals? Nope.

Should we do them anyway? That's a better discussion imo ... because (see the first phrase in this reply).

This also sorta reminds me of the trope "all immigrants are dirty and contagious" that is a little more common in certain regions of the US ... curiously, or not, the regions where that thought is more common are the ones least likley to get any actual immigrants moving there.

tHe LeFt is stating that airborne viruses don't care about borders, and we don't have an influx of Chinese people coming over the border to bring the virus here. That's a long swim.

US border security and coronavirus have nothing to do with each other.

I know plenty of hard working Americans that go to main land China for work reasons all the time. People travel to China and Hong Kong all the time!

Well we do have a crap ton of students returning this week from China. That’s not the issue, we need to monitor and regulate borders, most nations do it every day.

The left needs to stop being so short sighted with just letting people in and letting them vote and get better supportive benefits than Americans who need those programs. Instead they just let them in and let the system handle it.

You are correct about the public health issues created by this and the working poor in our nation. Without a supporting public health system that also educates these population groups, we will eventually face a public health crisis in the nation.

Elevating groups through supportive health care and education programs will elevate their standard of living, improve their health and lower birth rates, it’s just what happens. This will reduce strain on the system. Eventually we could see some type of hybrid healthcare system with public buckets that people can select from that compete with one another and have transparency with prices and procedures. These can be supplemented with private insurance from employers or purchased programs. Initial costs will be high and they will decrease as the system stabilizes, hopefully. You have to eliminate lobbying first, I don’t see universal healthcare working here, it’s too broad and/or restrictive.

I am a huge fan of the Israeli healthcare system and if I remember correctly, Australia also offers a hybrid program but I’m not too familiar with theirs.

I'm fine with border security. I just want an easier path to legal citizenship. It's the answer to the problem. The fact is, though, that US border security has NOTHING to do with coronavirus, and this thread is stupid. The Trump answer to border security will be as effective against illegal immigrants as it is against an airborne virus. Not even a little bit. Neither one of them care about walls.

That is a low blow. Dealing with deadly virus coming into our countries is a world away from dealing with not letting in people that are seeking sanctuary. So low.
